I haven't been able to find anything on google about this, and it just started happening spontaneously, so I'm worried that I may be seeing the first symptoms of a hard drive failure. I hope someone can tell me that I'm wrong, and I've just done something stupid.

Here's the situation:
When my screen saver starts, it makes the expose 'tink' noise and the screen comes back on repeatedly (so the effect is a repeating fade-to-black-Tink!-screen comes back on...very annoying).

When I start system preferences to turn off the screen saver (or change it to a different module), preferences opens normally, but when I click on 'Desktop&screen saver', I get the 'Tink!' and system preferences quits.

I have temporarily solved the problem by going into my ~/Library/Screen savers directory and removing the module I was using (Mac3DWatch.saver). Now I can get into the 'desktops&screen savers' pane of system preferences without it quitting, but there are no modules present (even though other .saver modules are present in my ~/Library/Screen savers directory).

What is most worrying about this is that it was working fine earlier today, and I haven't changed or downloaded anything...I've just been working in Word and running iTunes. I've tried rebooting to no avail, and I'm starting to get worried.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Cheers

The first step (I'm not saying it will fix the problem) should be repairing permissions, and re-prebinding all files. The easiest way to accomplish it is by using a free utility called Onyx. You can nab that utility on versiontracker.com or macupdate.com.

You didn't mention whether you tried that already, so I thought I'd suggest it.

Thanks Howie, I should've mentioned it, but I did try that (as well as running all the maintainance scripts via MacJanitor).

Any other ideas?
