Hi, last week I tried to install 10.3 on a Beige G3 (300mhz MT, 768 RAM, 8 Gig Partition for X, plus others). I ran the program and selected my settings and it wouldn't boot off the cd. A grey screen with a 0 with a / through it is what I got. I tried it 3 times with different settings in Xpost before I gave up and put 10.2.8 on it.
Any XpostFacto guru's out here that can lend a hand?
I was booting from 9 at the time, as I erased X completely before trying it.
It was easier getting Jaguar on my G3 8500!!I tried as well using Xpost3 on my Beige G3 300mhz, and started set-up went to reboot from OS 10.3 starts fine then goes to a grey box which is in all mixed languages something i'm guessing about turn power off. From what i've read the beige has alot of issues when it comes to Panther via Xpost3.I went back to Jag as well.

That would be a "kernel panic". Rare, but complete in its System crashing results. I've never used Xpostfacto, so I can't help you any further. But that was definitely a kernel panic.

Well after posting i thought i'd give it another try.It was really bugging me that my rev a iMac has Panther on it!!I left the OPTION's untouched this time set to boot into OS10.2 and then install from cd(OS10.3).Everything went fine this time, was able to upgrade over Jaguar and is running great.Give it another try, make sure when it wants to update files at the start of opening Xpost3 you let it.
I've been using XPF for quite a while now. Although the beige G3 can be tempermental, I've always got it going. I'm running 10.3.4 on a beige DT G3 with XPF 3.17b. IMHO, XPF is well worth the "donation" price the Ryan Rempel asks for. When you donate, you get lots of support through the XPF forums.
My beige G3 has been a standup machine all along. I love it. I was away this weekend and didn't get to tinker with it but I will give it a go sometime this week. Anyway I can get that version of XpostFacto from you?
This is the G3 config,
G3 MT 300mhz,
768 MB RAM
27 Gig HD Quantum and
8 Gig HD WD on a
Sonnet 100ATA Card PCI Card
USB/Firewire PCI Card
Lite-On 16x CD-RW (bootable)
Sure, I could give you a copy...but seriously it is a complicated piece of software for which I suspect you will need support. I highly recommend paying the donation "fee" and get access to the support forums.
But before any of that. Does your G3 have an updated video card or are you running on the old ATI Rage Pro? If you still use the Rage Pro, make SURE you pay that fee so that you can get help. In my case, I have installed a PCI ATI Radeon (Mac Edition). This makes using XPF easier, because the video card can handle what OS X is throwing at it. XPF is supposed to work now with the old built-in video card, but there are problems.
Hi, I was able to find an old version on the XpostFacto site and I installed it. I got it to install the first disc of Panther but upon the reboot I got a kernel panic (black screen with asian type and saying I must restart). I don't feel like wasting too much time playing around with it right now so I just booted into 9 tossed it and I'm in the process of installing 10.2.8 again.
Thanks for your help.
The video card I'm using is the built in video and I've never had a problem with it (ATI Rage 2) 6mb of VRAM I think...
Whenever it comes that I must run panther in order to use certain software then I might try upgrading to Panther then but until then just let sleeping dogs lie.
