Thank you to those who tried helping me hook up my two macs to one DSL connection using my SMC router.....still no luck but I have a change of plan. Here is what I want to do......I have an iMac and my wife has an iBook with an airport card, I am currently with Bell for my high speed DSL internet. I want to use the same DSL connection to make both computers work on the net at the same time however I want the iBooks connection to be wireless while my iMac uses an ethernet cable. I'm assuming this can be done? Can anyone suggest a good wirless router to purchase at the cheapest price? The best way to do this?
I have a similar situation here, actually. I have my G5 upstairs, connected thru Airport, while the modem and a Dell *shudders* are all wired down in the basement.
I have it hooked up this way: The Graphite AP is cabled to a D-Link DI-614 (but I can't use the wireless on the D-Link because it doesn't work, but that's beside the point. Either pretend it's a regular router without Wifi, or pretend I am using the Wifi on it, and the Graphite AP doesn't exist, either way gets you to the same result) as is the Dell. The DI-614 is configured for NAT routing w/DHCP server, but the trick here is that since the Graphite AP is acting as a bridge, I can use MAC address filtering on the router, and not the Graphite AP, which is a pain in the ass to configure (since it requires spontaneous rebooting, and doing to cuts off my connection to the router).
That said, if you have a crappy 1-port Wifi like I do, you can join it to a router to connect more stuff, in much the same way as I do, without having to configure two routers. However, if you are starting from scratch, get a combined router (like my D-Link, except not a broken one...). If you have a router already, get a cheap wireless bridge (for sub-100$) and let the existing router do all the work (that is of setting PPPoE and NAT). If you already have half the parts, why spend money again, when clever configuring can make life easy.
You can get a cheap Dl-514 wireless DSL/Router from TigerDirect for
$28.97 plus tax and shipping.
Or a more expensive D-Link - Dl-624 - AirPlus Xtreme G
108Mbps 2.4GHz Wireless Router for $83.99 after rebates tax and shipping.
I have a DWL 900AP+ Airplus 2.4ghz wireless access point that I
used to use with the Dl-604 for my laptop and that worked fine.
But I don't think that it would be a good idea to combine the
access point with another brand like your router, Better to stick
with all one brand.

You most likely won't find any Mac products in this store,
But you will find a lot of stuff that works with a Mac.

It's a cool store with lots of used junk in the back and a long aisle of motherboards. Lots of great prices on PC parts. They don't necessarily have everything but they do have a lot of choice. It's just south of Hwy 7 on Woodbine on the East side.
Hello everyone. I went to TigerDirect today and picked up the D-Link DI-514 wireless router. Hooked it up to my iMac via ethernet and wanted the wireless to work on my iBook. I can't access the internet? I established an IP with the wireless router and my Airport status is connected with full strength but cannot access the net? Have I done something wrong in my settings? Any ideas?
You'll need to provide a bit more information. My guess is that you didn't release your IP address from your old router before connecting and renewing the IP address on the new router.
That's a place to start, anyway.
That's the mistake I made. After that I got everything up and running pretty easily. I have WEP enabled at 128-bit and MAC filtering for my wife's ethernet, my ethernet, and my airport.
