This may be a shot in the dark. I really don't know much at all about networking but it looks like Im gonna have to learn since nobody in my house seems to be concerned with the problems we are having.

There is no problem networking the pcs and the Mac.

The problem is that we get disconected at least once a week and I mean for more than 24 hours. sometimes for 3-4 days.

the Admin. comp (PC) seems to always be able to connect to the net. Or usualy. The other two (PC, and a Mac) can not at times.

It is either; 2 wont connect and one will, or all three will be fine.

The other thing is: when the two computers can not connect to the net we can still see each other on the network but we can not see the main station which is able to connect.

we used to use a Linksys router but there was apparently firmware issues and we thought that may be the problem. So i bought a new D-link router and the same problems occur.

We called our service provider and they said it is not an issue with them.

what could it be?
Are there viruses that can cause this on a PC?
could it have been configured wrong?

when its working, everything works great.

any suggestions are welcome. As I said I don't know much about networking. Id be willing to learn but Im at work for 12 hours a day and dont have a net connection half the time when I get home.

Hello,

Your service provider is right when he says he can't do anything.
Your problem comes from your local network (LAN) and not from external network (WAN).
The admin PC close connections sometimes for some raisons that he only knows why.
You must seek for some errorlogs and discover what is happening with this.
Which operating system is used on this admin PC ?

both PCs are using xp pro I believe
and I use osx 10.2.6

should we try making my mac the Admin. user?

How do you check for error messages on a pc? I have no idea whats going on when you put me on a windows box.

would the problems be easy to figure out from the message? or is it gonna take some research?
