Hey everyone! Ok, I formatted my mac and reinstalled panther. Unfortunately, in my sleep deprived state I was stupid enough to not back up my music library. :S I still have it all on my 3rd gen iPod, thank the lord...but i can't figure out how to get it from my iPod to my mac again. Could anyone help me out? thanks!
the only way I know is to download the omni web browser, then drag your ipod icon onto the web browser and you can see everything on your ipod, you just have to hunt for the songs, and reload them onto your mac again, I hope there is an easier way for you

Yep. Done that. There are a couple of programs, but my fav is iPodRip. It will let you transfer everything, including all of the tags back to iTunes. That way, you don't lose all of the work you have done categorizing.
Well, it is easy to see the files on the iPod. The problem is that they are contained in folders and each title starts with the track number of that album. If you just drag the files over, you would have all of these song titles that need to be fixed.
It would also take awhile to open each sub folder. I have over 3300 songs on my iPod and handling each one singly would take a long time.
A program like iPodRip simply gives you a "iTunes in reverse" interface. A couple of clicks and your done.
Apple has purposely made it difficult to transfer songs from the iPod to the computer in order to stop sharing. It is stupid, but has given shareware makers something to go after.
It unlocks the hidden files (iTunes Library) so all you have to do is copy them to the HD. Very simple.

liquidgenesis - It is possible to stop an iPod from automatically updating itself. When you connect the iPod to your Mac, hold the Command and Option keys, and it will halt the automatic update. It will then load in iTunes but won't update. You can then use the iPod button in the bottom right to set it to Manual access to turn the automatic update while you retrieve your songs.
I did the same thing and wiped out my itunes library by mistake. I had all my songs on my ipod but if i connected it to my dock, it will automatically update the ipod, and if itunes library is empty, then guess what, your ipod will become the same.
Do what I did. Start from the beginning again.
I know that sucks but thats how I learned from that mistake.
