i'm convinced that i've got the same problem as rade.

after visiting the buffalo apple store WITH rade, i get home and i discover my internet is crawling slow. i don't have a sub shop guy across the street or anything, but i'm relatively sure someone's stealing from me.

i have a wireless d-link router, model # DI-714P+ and i want to set it up so that only my hard wired iMac, and my airport card-equipped iBook can access the precious, precious internet.

can i set it up so that all it needs is a password thing? oh, and i think that when rade comes over he can have access too. he's a nice guy. so make that 3 computers. well, actually it can be an infinite number of computers, so long as they have permission from me to use the interweb.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

The easiest thing to do will be to simply add a WEP key. If you want to further lock out the security you can also do MAC filtering, but that will require getting the Ethernet IDs of each of the machines, so a 128 bit WEP key sounds best.

You need to connect to your D-Link router. By default you should have to go to http://192.168.0.1 and then enter your username and password.

Next you need to navigate to your wireless section, which should be there on the opening page on the left hand side if my D-Link router page experience serves me correct. You can then enable WEP, and enter a password. This password will have to be known by all computers that connect to your router.

I highly suggest doing the alterations with your hard wired iMac and then test your changes at the same time with the iBook to confirm you can still use the wireless connection.

I'm a big fan of WEP myself for wireless networks I've setup. I like to take it one step further just to be safe (Must be the war driving feature I saw on Tech TV!) most routers will have a (allow access to) feature where you can define the MAC address of a system(s) network card allowing only those MAC addresses access to the network and internet. You can never be secure enough!

Thanks for thinking 'bout me, 'daycus.

I actually not shocked at all that someone in your area is stealing teh bandwidth. that it could happen in my 'hood, with all of the old people, and even more old people, is what is surprising. I can never go into that subshop ever again. The window for 2 dolla subs is getting smaller, too.

Man, I really want my computer back. My brother's G4 only has so much RAM (256, for some reason). Weak.
