I have an eMac, 700Mhz, G4 (?) and have the airport card. My father also has an eMac, but it's much newer, and he has the Airport extreme card. We live in the same house, separated by two floors.
My problem is this; Without warning, my AirPort will either lose the signal, and suddenly find it again, or it will lose the signal, and stay lost for a while. Also, without any input from me, it will suddenly switch to it's "Internal modem" and slow everything down.
I've talked to the dealer about it, and he wasn't any help at all. This card is 5 months old, and was until recently, very reliable. I'm getting pretty frustrated, and have tried various things to correct this problem. I'm not terribly savvy about computers, and I'm still learning about my new Mac.
Has your card worked fine earlier in this conficguration ?
With the same distance between the two machines ?
Haven't you set a wireless phone or a microwaves near one of the apparatus ?
This must works only the two floors wide LAN can make some opposition.

do you have an ABS or AEBS?
if the 2 macs are connected only by their airport cards, the range is very limited. i am surprised that you can connect through the two floors to begin with.
have you both upgraded to the latest airport s/w?

I suspect the issue might be the "extreme" card s/ware. Apple put out a patch very recently which Software Update will pick up. It solved the same sort of problem in my AE-equipped AlBook.
See if installing the patch helps. Failing that it's likely to do with some sort of interference (such as mentioned in the posts above) or just too much distance between stations.
Yes, that patch also worked on my original airport. I have a Pismo PB with airport, a grey airport station and an eMac with Airport Extreme. I never get any drop outs.
It sounds like you have a case of Windows XP!
So try the updates.
I'm a little slow when it comes to computers, so please forgive me...
The two computers worked just fine for three months prior to this, no drop-outs or switching to the internal modem. I installed every update my computer asked me for, and I don't have a cordless phone anywhere near the computer. I do have a TV, (Both are on my desk, in my room) but the TV isn't on when I'm plinking on the computer...
The techie fellow at the Mac store told me to try deleting all of my old Airport software, and then re-loading it. I tried this, and really haven't seen much of a difference.
Still confused, but I'll look for an Airport update right after I'm finished typing one other message.
