I want to back up my work e-mail and it's about 300 MB. Is there a way to simply back-up the data file on my Lacie drive, take it home and import into my Mac?

Nope

It is down to outlook being the most freakingly controlled MS product ever. It won't even communicate with entourage properly. That's probably what MS will get sued for next.

Two suggestions:

1) Check the microsoft mac pages and see if their recommendations get you anywhere

2) Open a trial .mac account and use the same account on both platforms to drag and drop. But be careful, some attachments won't transfer. Here is an old thread that discussed how to do it. Includes step by step instructions:

Good luck

Way back when we still used a PC for email
It was at the dawn of OSX.1

We had to deal with this transition.
I seem to remember that you can use Netscape as your conduit?
i.e. export on PC from Outlook to NS, copy files to Mac, import into NS on Mac, finally import from NS to Mail

I've done it 4 times for people. So it isn't a HARD process, just very, very time intensive.

Here's a guide how to do it

It's specifically for Entourage, but Mail.app uses mboxes so you can also import the mboxes into Mail.

Hello Chealion,

You say that Mail.app uses mboxes so you can also import the mboxes into Mail...I could use some guidance...

I have imported most of my data from Entourage to Mail but have a few emails lingering in Entourage which I've saved as mboxes to my desktop (the icon appears). Rather than re-importing my entire database, I just want to add these select few. Mail guides me through the steps but when the new folder shows up - there's nothing in it! Should I back eveything up and try re-installing Mail?

any suggestions/tips?

thx

Hi, I haven't imported directly into mail from Outlook before, or through Entourage to Mail, so I can't say for certain why it isn't working.

Why when you export these messages they won't appear doesn't make too much sense. The best options I can think of are to either reimport all your mail again into Mail.app, or forward the messages to yourself again. Not the best solutions, but ones that do work.

Hi Chealion,

Thanks for the tip, I decided to re-import the entire database and kept only the few I really needed. Much to my surprise, Mail & Ical made it easy to import data from Entourage. Address Book required more patience. Glad to have finally said good bye to Entourage....hoping to replace Word and Excel with Appleworks as well.

Glad it worked out for you!

AppleWorks can do most of what both Word and Excel can do, but isn't as widely accepted as Word or Excel, so you still may want to keep using Word and Excel if you interact with anyone using a PC or the business world.
