My computer has been acting very odd during the last few days. On two occasions, it had turned itself off unexpectedly while in use. Not a proper shut down, but a sudden power off. In each case the CPU would shut off first and my LCD would shut off 30 seconds or so after.

Then another strange thing happened just now. My computer was powered off about an hour ago, and while I was in bed it suddenly powered itself on out of nowhere. A couple of minutes later the CPU powered off again on it's own.

I checked my system properties and I do not have it scheduled to turn itself on or off in power management so I have no idea what could be causing it to do this?

I have a 1.25 GHZ MDD running Panther (been using Panther for a couple months now without any problems).

Anyone have any idea what is happening?

Maybe a bad front switch or even more likely the switch on the LCD ( if Apple).
Hard to diagnose - if you have another monitor try it. We've seen bent pins onthe adc connection cause weird things.

Do you have (in Energy Saver) an automatic turn on at a specific time turned on? Restart after Power failure?

It could also be an issue of heat, so are your fans running? Or a power bar that went bad, strange but possible. I've had a computer at work do similar symptoms, and replacing the power bar was the strangest magic cure.

If not that, it could be a problem with the motherboard.

This sounds more like a hardware issue with your computer. I would get it checked out at your nearest Apple dealer.

hrm, more strange things are happening... after I posted my original msg, which was around 3am this morning, I put my computer to sleep (monitor and hard disk) instead of shutting down. When I woke up at 7am I noticed that the cpu fan was running so it must have came out of sleep mode on its own while I was sleeping.

The only thing that I can think of that i've done differently in the past few days is add a humidifier in the room where the computer is in. Could that possibly have an effect ...? Maybe that's a stretch but I really don't know what else it could be.

MacDoc, the LCD is indeed Apple. I do have a CRT on my PC which I can possibly use. I'll give that a try.

My Energy Saver options are pretty much set at default (no scheduling and in "other options" only wake for ethernet and allow power button to sleep are selected).

I guess I will give it another day (with humidifier turned off) and if the problem persists I will get it checked out by an Apple dealer (i'm still under warrantee too).
