I managed to connect my ibook (panther) to the internet via a router shared by a pc (xp). i've set them up so that the pc can see all the files on the ibook. i cannot see the pc from my network browser tho and am at a loss on correcting this.

You don't mention what OS you're using, but if you're on OS X, follow the steps below.

I use samba to connect to my Dell laptop through a WiFi router.

Use the Finder's GO menu and select "Connect to Server..." then enter this:

smb://192.168.0.xxx where xxx is the last three digits of the IP address of the pc. Your local IP numbers may be different, so the basic process is smb://_IP_of_PC

At this point your Mac should connect and you will be presented with the "shared" folder of the PC.

download DAVE (free trial) and try to see if it works
if not, you probably have some system issues

www.thursby.com for DAVE

that's why i suggeted you try DAVE since it uses NetBios over TCP/IP to connect to the PC
It makes the Mac look like a PC to the PC

Panther fixes most of these hiccups.
I can now share files and use printers seamlessly.
Rather than buying DAVE, consider OSX.3?

i always suggest that people TRY DAVE
it's a great way to diagnose and make sure that your hardware and OS are working OK
it is ready for OS 9 and OS X
you CAN buy it later if you wish

Just out of curiosity, can you double check that you have a shared folder/drive on the PC?

If you do, in Jaguar when you select 'Connect to Server' from the 'Go' menu you should be presented with a list of available workgroups in which you can see what shares are available.

Another trick is setting the workgroup of the PC and the workgroup of the Mac to the same thing. Be sure and use something unique, like 'DARKSCOT' for example.

You can change the workgroup of your Mac in the 'Directory Access' application, located in the Utilties folder in your Applications folder (yourharddrive/applications/utilities/Directory Access).

Choose the services tab, click the lock to allow changes, then select "SMB' from the list and hit "Configure..." Enter the workgroup name and that should be it.

If you need help changing your share/workgroup settings in Windows just post back here.

Hope this helps.
