i guess it is the carpet in my office and no matter how careful i am, everytime i touch my powerbook, it sets off a static spark. i am wondering about any ill or long term effects these will place on it. ideas? i hope i don't accidenatlly 'fry' it one day!

If you have it plugged in it will be grounded therefore protecting it.
