yuck. what a mess.

I backed up jaguar on my ipod and went ahead and partitioned my hard drive only to find out that I couldn't install panther after that because it didn't see a previous copy of jaguar on my drive (i was using the 29 dollar panther upgrade from apple).

(I partitioned like this:
1 gig OSX Swap
5 gigs photoshop scratch
30ish jaguar
30ish panther)

So I had to go install jaguar again and then install panther over it. Ok fine. That was annoying but I got through it. I was hoping to be able to do a clean install.

Then I carbon copied my jaguar from my ipod to my jaguar partition. That's fine. (But as I side note my ipod totally froze up and I had to reset it)

I also transferred over all of my app's and setting etc from my jaguar to my panther with almost no problem...just had to reinput some serial numbers.

My computer did crash this afternoon though. just totally froze up. I just went to click on safari when it happened. It froze with the cursor right on the icon...hadn't even pressed it yet.

And either ehmac was down (I haven't read the posts yet) or something...but I wasn't able to get in as of yesterday night until right now. I didn't know how much I depending on this place for help!

But my major problem is the mail program in Panther...I don't know if moving over my prefs etc from jaguar screwed it up or what (even though I tried throwing out my prefs to start again and still had problems), but here are my problems:

1. I can't seem to be able to get my hotmail as an account anymore. I didn't read anywhere that they were getting rid of this http feature

2. it won't let me open my mailboxes...you know...the drawer to the side of the mail program that shows all of your folders

like i said i think i threw out all the pref files and its still messes up.

HELP?!

Also, now that I have the OSX Swap partition put in that was recommended to me, what do I do with it? I have the understanding that a specific cache file is supposed to go in it or something?

And for the Photoshop scratch partition, I just specify that within the photoshop program preferences right?

That's it I guess.

I like the new finder layout...and expose is really great...but everything else seems to be the same. And nothing is faster for me...and my batter seems to be about the same. Maybe I'll notice other differences later on...I just thought this upgrade was going to be Hugely different. As long as I get mail fixed though, I'm happy

thanks gordguide

Try this for your mail.

I didn't have a problem importing the old mail (although when I did it - just like the apple document said actually - it just transferred the folders of my email accounts...it doesn't actually *make* them accounts...which is strange. I worked when I transferred them from my old 17" to my new 17" using jaguar...but for some reason transferring them from jaguar to panther something strange happens.

Also, i think the pref file was what was causing the problems with the "mailbox drawer" not being able to be shown... so I trashed it and just started from scratch.

But what's the deal with Panther not supporting web based email??? Why didn't they mention this *major* change?! Or am I confused? Maybe I downloaded an app to make that work for jaguar...but I don't remember doing so.

So what other programs can I use a scratch disk for? I've never heard of any except for photoshop. That's great though.

thanks again gordguide

Try this for your mail.

To move the swap partition, again you can do the terminal stuf (tricky, but works fine) or use a utility like SwapCop (easiest). Not sure if SwapCop is Panther compatible. Since there is no real hurry to do this, I would wait a few days till other users report on whether it works or not (it should, though).

Yes, just specify in PhotoShop preferences. If you won't be using them at the same time (or if it's a generous size, and yours is), you can also set it as the scratch disk for a bunch of programs (Toast, etc).

This app might fix your hotmail problem. In this case, it's definitely not Panther compatible; the developer is working on it, so you can either wait for him or check out another solution. I really can't help much with hotmail, as I don't use it (hotmail is just easy a target for spammers for my tastes).

Swap Cop

A plug-in for Jag's Mail to access accounts like Hotmail is here:

http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/XJ&sdn=em...mail-plugin%2F

But I don't know if it'll work in Panther, but maybe still try it.

thanks L4E....but that was the same link as Gord guides...and unfortunately it doesn't work for panther. I did email the developer though to see if he plans on updating it. Haven't heard back yet.

In the meantime I found a mail forwarding program that I will use in the meantime. Works very well (but I still prefer the plugins)

it can be found here
mail forward

Just curious: why keep a partition of Jaguar. I'd understand if you were using a beta version of the OS, but this new release seems pretty solid.

Also, what's the advantage of having a scratch disk for PhotoShop?

To anybody that is interested, the developer of the hotmail plugin for the mail program has now made one available for panther yay!

The link can be found in this thread.

Why hotmail you ask? Well why not? I've never had problems with it and I've had it for more than 6 years. No reason to switch. I have a mac account and my own business account too but I use all of the email accounts for different purposes.

Hey PGant Long time no see! Well the reason to keep the partition for jaguar is that I am in the middle of my schoolwork so if Panther went crazy on me I wanted to have a backup of my old system. Also, I was worried that I might have forgotten a file or two...which happened!...so I'm glad I kept it! After a few weeks when the major bugs are out of panther (don't know of any bugs yet though) and I am confident that I have all of the files I will need then I will erase jaguar and use that partition to store files.

And as for the photoshop swap partition I was told that when photoshop has a scratch disk that it can write to that isn't on the same "drive" as the program then it is able to run faster. I have yet to test this.

Also, to anybody out there that knows how to get my OSX swap partition up and going it would be much appreciated if you told me what I need to do
