Should I send this thing back?! Is it like the RAM thing? The silent dier....??

Here's the issue I've been trying to fix practically from day one (could have been with the new firmware/software update...to long to remember)

I put my powerbook to sleep...then wake it up (next day, or hours later) and THE INTERNET CONNECTION IS DEAD! Yet my internet meter is reading full, and the little checkmark is ticked next to my wireless connection name.

It's very frustrating.

What I was doing before was keeping a sharp object right next to the airport so I could (constantly) reset the thing.

Now I have put the Airport Admin Utility in my dock (that's how much I freaking use it) so that I can reset from there.

(I also resorted to actually sticking the cable plug into my computer....HENCE making the WIRELESS airport extreme completely useless. And it worked perfectly ALL the time with the cable plugged in. So I know it's not my card or the cable companies fault)

Once I reset it's fine....until I put it to sleep...or sometimes after I restart the computer (after an install or something).

I've read all the freaking database things on apple and they just say reset it. Well you know what I say apple??!?! FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!

ok. I've vented.

Anyway. What I wanted to know was does anyone else have this problem? And if so, did they fix it, and HOW??

OR should I send the thing back?!?

At what point do you know it's faulty?!

(Not only that but when I take my laptop to school...we have wireless internet there....I've had NO problems...works like a charm....I open my computer from sleep, log on...and I'm off and running.)

Other than that my system is working BEAUTIFULLY and I'm SO happy with my new computer

p.s. my printer never works hooked up to airport exreme either. It's a canon s9000 and last night I painfully installed all of the drivers and software etc....and it worked. Then I tested it this morning after the computer being asleep..you guessed it. nothing. It will GO to print...and the print center will SAY it's printing. But it's not. It can't fool me.

Oh help

I have the same problem with one of my original airport base stations.

I have found that having an intneral DNS sever and not relying on the outside DNS from your ISP has helped some of my airport installs to stay active.

Is the airport giving you IP address errors where it is not handing out DHCP based IP numbers on your airport network?

i.e. instead of receiving another IP of 192.168.1.XX you are getting an IP address on your local powermac of 169.254.254.XX or something along those lines?

You might want to check and see if you have another DHCP service running on your network. If your airport is handing out IP's on the 192.168.1.XX network and your DHCP/router is handing out 192.168.1.XX numbers on your network as well, you could have conflicting subnets that are conflicting with one another, and the airport could stop handing out IP's properly.

If that does not work, you could flash the firmware to the defaults and then update to the latest version. that might work as well.

If all else fails, phone apple, explain the problem to them and they will probably replace it for you.

Pamela,

It's great to have you in here... helps keep the rest of us evangelists honest, and reminding us that while Apple makes great products, some things could use some mega-tweaking.

A couple of suggestions:

1/ Airport Extreme. By chance, have you selected "Use Interference Robustness" from the Airport menu? I've yet to see a Mac make a WiFi connection with this thing enabled.

2/ Printing. We had this problem with our eMac network - the solution (for us at least) was to go to the "Sharing" preference pane and turn on Printer Sharing. But that was using the eMac as the "base station," which probably doesn't apply to your situation...

pamela - I feel your pain.

Our airport extreme base station occasionally does the same thing. Very frustrating when it does.

the only thing that fixes it seems to be the "pointy object into the little hole"

Pamela,

Have you applied the September Firmware update (5.1.3) ?

I hate troubleshooting with apple.

They just do I'll the stuff that I've already been doing for 4 months.

I didn't know there was another firmware update. So I just installed it about half an hour ago.

It's seems to be working better...we'll see.

But my printer still isn't printing.

edit: hmm...I turned my printer on and off and now it's working.

I hate to think that it's all fixed!!!

Let me restart the computer and then wait a bit and then put it to sleep...see if it still does it. If not then I think I may be in the clear?!!

I've given up on the sleep function for my G4 400, and Wallstreet 233.

Nothing pertinant in the Apple knowledge base, and no answers from this board. The G4 has a kernal panic shortly after waking from sleep, and the Powerbook's screen won't turn back on after sleep.....if Apple can't support the sleep function properly on their hardware, it shouldn't be included....
