I bought a few brand name (SanDisk and Kingston) 2 GB Micro SD cards which I have used a few times with no problems only having stored 10 mp3 files on them, but now I wanted to fill up the card with mp3 music and I find that I can only put about 500 MB on the card when I get a message that the card is full.
It's actually a bit stranger than that - I get the message that the card is full intially at around 300 MB, if I then cut back and fill the card up to the 300 MB limit, I can still add more in little chunks until I hit about 500MB or so and that seems to be the end.
Pretty much the same for both cards.
I bought these a while back so I don't know exwectly where I bought them to complain.
But it seems to me that the cards are fakes even so they look very real.
What I really want to find out - is there any way to check with the Mac what the REAL memory capacity of these cards is?
Disk Utility reports therm as 2GB cards.
The whole thing is more annoying than anything else - these cards are pretty cheap, so I'm not upset about the money but the time I'm wasting trying to use them.

I didn't format any of the cards.
They are all MS-DOS the way they were shipped - I want to use them in an mp3 player and I need FAT formatting for that anyway.
I also bought a few 8GB Micro SD cards are few years ago, those were also originally MS-DOS and I had no trouble filling those up to their full capacity.
Something is really fishy with the 2 GB ones in that capacity changes.
Those cards could very well be fake (for capacity) unless they were purchased from a proper reliable source.
I'd try using Disk Utility to partition/format appropriately and use its options for a proper format and maybe even use the zero out data and "free space" option.
Doing any of these will of course destroy any existing data on the card(s).
OT, but I had a strange thing with DU last week when partitioning/formatting (and various options tried) with an external Hitachi 2.5" USB 3.0 drive via USB 2.0 to be used for a backup drive for an Intel iMac.
Regardless of what I tried, the OS X kept saying that the new partitioned/formatted drive could not be used properly as it was a "Read Only" device. Go figure. ;(
After I read your post I decided to format one of the problem cards using Disk Utility and the standard Mac format.
I sort of expected that Disk Utility would either give me an error message or format to a much lower capacity than the 2 GB advertised but to my surprise, formatting went without a hitch and it showed 1.99 GB when done.
So I thought - the proof is in the pudding - let me try to save a big file; 1 had a 1.64GB file and tried copying that.
Went without any problems and the file played fine from the Micro SD card.
I then added a few more files and the card took that as well with no problems.
So....at least on that card it looks that just the factory formatting was all screwed up.
Later I will try the MS-DOS formatting and saving the original files.
Thanks pm-r, I was rady to turf these cards out.
PS: I formatted the card on the Mac to MS-DOS FAT 32, it took 1.99 GB of files with no issue whatsoever.
I seldom turf any computer related stuff unless it's truly dead, and I won't mention the Monty Python BDead Bird skit, and sometimes it's worth a glass of two of wine and try to use some other options.
Let's hope your partition/formatting back to MS-DOS works to allow full access.
And I've had too much very enjoyable red dry wine this evening, but didn't some formatted MS-DOS volumes have trouble seeing anything over a certain GB size? And could that be part of the SD card MS-DOS format problem??
Just a thought... and maybe a stupid one.
And have a good Canada Day weekend. And a drink or two... ... or ...

Can't handle a single file over 2 GB I think......
How about last night's Blue Moon to celebrate as we won't get another until 2015, but I know I can't last that long to celebrate without a glass or more before then ...
