I thought that would be a breeze with Acrobat 9 but after spending a ridiculous of time both with the application and checking on line, I'm still no further ahead.
All I can think of (which I'm sure it will work) is to save the pdf as a jpg, make the changes, ie move the page number, and resave as a pdf.
But I'm sure that doesn't do much for the final quality of the document.
Problem is that after I converted the pdf to a "booklet format, the text is printed both on the right and left side and on the left page, the page number at the bottom should really be on the left, not the right as in the original pdf.
I'm looking for a way to either move the page numbers from right to left on every second page or if that can't be done in the pdf directly, at least delete the page numbers that are on the left sheet but at the bottom right.
No luck doing either in Acrobat 9 or Preview.
Any suggestions how to do this in the pdf document directly?
I used to use an application named Pitstop for PDF manipulation. Don't know if it's still around. Quite expensive at just over $1000 when I bought it over ten years ago but easily justifiable in certain circumstances.

You need Acrobat Pro to manipulate PDFs. If you don't have it, open the pdf in Illustrator, make the revision, and save. You will have to open each page individually with this method.

I have Acrobat Pro 9, I mention that in my original post.
I can do a lot of pdf manipulations with that but moving a page number doesn't seem to be one of them.
Frustrating because Acrobat Pro 9 is pretty expensive.
I'll try Illustrator which I have as well.
PS: Turns out I don't have Illustrator after all, I thought I did.
But I found the original Pages file, so I can work on that.
Would still be nice to find out how to do something that basic in Acrobat 9

First off, you said you had Acrobat 9, which is different that Acrobat Pro. Nonetheless, You have to go to Tools/Advanced Editing/ and select the "Touch Up Object Tool". With that you should be able to select the page number and drag it to where you need it. However, some times on pdfs, the text blocks are joined, and moving one item will cause other items to shift. In those cases I will use Illustrator or revert to the original document if available.

Hmmm....the Adobe is not very consistent what they call their product.
The folder in my application folder is called "Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro"
The application itself inside that folder is called "Adobe Acrobat Pro" (no 9)
The name of the application in the dock is also "Adobe Acrobat Pro"
But if I check the 'About Acrobat' window, the application is called "Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro"
So what do I have, Acrobat 9 or Acrobat Pro?
Sounds like I have neither
PS: Just tried what you suggest with whatever software I have.
Works perfectly - I kept trying to use text toolswhich didn't do anything, but the move object tool does what I need.
Thank-you
You have Acrobat Pro 9. In your original post you simply said "Acrobat 9". The "Pro" is important because Adobe has free software call Acrobat (Reader) which does not include those editing tools. I was just trying to determine if you had the proper software to accomplish what you were trying to do.

Thanks for the comment.
I thought that perhaps Adobe had come out with a lower cost, fewer feature version of Acrobat Pro that I had missed.
Many software vendors have a basic version aimed at consumers and a higher priced "professional" version.
I always refer the the reader as Acrobat Reader but I hardly use it since Preview does everything Acrobat Reader does plus a whole lot more.
