Help! Kobo and imac no longer recognize/freeze

Desperately need some help here with my wife's Kobo/imac, which is driving her crazy, and by extension, me too!

I know this is not really an Apple problem, but I've searched around for solutions, and found very little, thought I'd try the expertise on this forum.

Here's the problem: She's had the Kobo since Christmas, good little ereader. (we have an ipad as well) She's been using it with the Kobo desktop, buying books no problem. She also downloads books from the public library, and to transfer them to the Kobo she uses Adobe digital editions (a program for viewing and managing ebooks) Very handy, lots of stuff at our library. Been using it no problem with our fairly new 21" imac.

All of a sudden, about four weeks ago, when you launch Adobe with the Kobo attached, the program freezes, and you have to force quit. (she's always had to connect the Kobo first and then launch Adobe, if she launched first, then connected the Kobo, it never recognized it.)

I've tried everything, and cannot get Adobe to not freeze, or recognize the Kobo.
I've tried:
-Reloading adobe many times
-Downloading every update for the imac currently available
-Completely delete the kobo, reinstall system.
-Authorizing/deauthorizing the kobo.
-Running disc utility on the imac
-And, I've tried all the above on my 27" imac, and our old G4 ibook,
loading in adobe, and the program STILL freezes like the 21"

I'm at a loss what to do next. Has anyone with a kobo run into this?
Can anyone suggest an alterative to Adobe digital Editions. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Dave

My wife and all her friends just love their KOBOs but we haven't used the Adobe digital editions much, but maybe some of the suggestions may help and it sounds like having the correct versions may help, or even a uninstall/reinstall may be needed:

What is Adobe Digital Editions?

Why can't I complete the Kobo Touch firmware upgrade or Desktop upgrade?

PS: had you done any OS X updates when the problem started?

Hi pm-r thanks for the response.
Pretty sure I didn't do any updates that would have caused the freezing. I'll check out those links you posted. Question: Does your wife use your library for downloads, if so, what program does she use? I can't seem to find a different program other than Adobe Digital Editions that works with a library download. Kobo desktop no problems.
Thanks Dave

She has the KOBO desktop and the other KOBO associated software (Adobe digital editions and some other "translator" type software) but it hardly ever gets used and I don't think the non-kobo has ever been used on her PPC G5 iMac and OS X 10.5.8.

I have the KOBO desktop on my Intel iMac with OS X 106.8 only because as I recall, we had trouble setting up a kobo account or something back in April on her iMac.

All books she gets and uses so far she has done using her KOBO Touch and pays and downloads them directly from her kobo account to her kobo via the kobo's wireless and any connectable wi-fi connection.
