Looking to use my computer to play some tunes outside, during a get-together. I am able to accomplish this using the remote.app and my macbook running iTunes.
With the absence of a regular wireless network, I was able to accomplish this by creating an adhoc network from the macbook. Connecting the device to iTunes worked ok, but created some issues. Having security on stopped the iPod from joining the network and communicating with iTunes. This worked fine for and iPhone and iPad.
The current sticking point is when the iPod type device goes to sleep, it takes upwards of a minute to rejoin the network (does this the first time too). In a home networking environment, this takes substantially less time... a few seconds.
Is this problem fixable or inherent to creating an adhoc network? I am concerned about adding a wireless router, as this might create another link in the chain that might cause issues, and would seem unnecessary.
I am also up for any suggestions or ideas users have in accomplishing the following task:

Get an Airport Express wireless router for $99 and create your own WiFi zone. I do it at school in my classroom all the time and then even my students can beam songs using AirPlay.

It's basically a speaker that connects to my iPod wirelessly through Bluetooth, or it comes with a 3.5mm cable you can use as well. The speaker itself is also wireless with a built in battery, or you can keep it plugged in, which I generally do. The Battery will last for about a day. Sound is surprisingly decent.

Don't know what your adhoc network is but I have next to zero latency when joining my own password protected network when waking the iPod from sleep and using the remote App... if you are logged in you are logged in... I think your problems must reside elsewhere. My Mac is easily 30 - 40 ft away and inside when I am using the iPod as a remote outside on the patio.
I think the benefit for you using the wireless speaker option I suggested is that it eliminates your network from the equation. The connection exists between the speaker and your iPod so you can take it beyond your backyard should you ever need to. It also eliminates your Macbook from the equation. No need to drag your laptop around or leave it outside somewhere. This is particularly beneficial if, like mine, your gatherings involve kids running around all over the place.

I'm with you, and agree. My iPod doesn't hold my entire library either, but I can certainly dump enough music into a playlist that will span even a lengthy backyard get together. I like the Airport Express as an option as well but it assumes there's an outside outlet to plug it into, and some speakers to plug into the Airport.
I read the original post to understand that the OP was going to try to use the speakers built into the Macbook, which I may have miss-assumed. I didn't love that option.
