Early 2008 Mac pro, no display signal

My early 2008 8-core mac pro has no video signal.

Earlier in the week I had to restart it to get the monitor a signal. Now its dead.

I tried starting in safe mode, starting from OS CD, and nothing works.

I'm assuming my video board is fried.

Any other ideas before I take her in?

Obviously my applecare has expired.

If it's just the video card: ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (Canada).

(It says it is for a Mid 2010 but it works on all Mac Pro models down to the first-gen. model.)

most likely the video card.

a quick (temporary) solution may be to remove the card and see if there's any dust build up in the fans. If there is vacuum it out and reinstall.

caveat to this ^ is that the machine has to be running 10.6 or newer.

Monitor came on once tonight, now dead again. Zapped p ram and still no video signal. I guess she's off to Apple tomorrow.

I hear there were problems with some of the video cards for that year, maybe Apple will be kind? Apple care expired last fall.

Have a quick read, here, and, here.

Click on the links in the first story. It'll take you to an Apple discussion regarding that video card. Might as well gather as much info as you can.

Which video card?

While it may be the 8800 from NVidia it may also be a Radeon 2600 XT video card (stock card in the 2008 Mac Pro)

This card has also been known to fail:

Mac Pro (Early 2008): ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card with distorted video or no video

https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0

If this is your card, Apple has been known to replace them outside of Applecare coverage on the original machine - good luck!

That's my Card, Apple care ran out in September 2011. But I'm going give it a shot at the Apple store. Fingers crossed for a free video card replacement.

This program has since long expired for OOW units.
