Tethering with a data plan <1GB

I'm currently testing out a 500mb data plan for the Iphone. It's costing me $25 for a month but I thought I'd try this before signing up for the 6GB/$30 plan (or any other data plan). It was only afterwards that I found out that Rogers doesn't offer tethering for data plans under 1GB. Did some searching and found a way around this. In case anyone is interested, the instructions are at phonetweaks.com

On a similar note though, how can Rogers control data tethering for iphone users after Dec 09?

Given that they have the means to turn tethering on or off for the individual and they have said they will make determinations on pricing for tethering based on usage stats it's safe to assume that Apple setup tethering in a way that the carriers can keep a very close eye on it. A company like Rogers stands to potentially lose some serious revenue streams if, for example, lighter users decide to cancel their home internet service and just use their iPhone.

I have the 3G iPhone with the 6Gb plan and I tried tethering for the first time. It's pretty cool and am glad that with the recent 3.0 update, it makes my iPhone even more useful. When I tried enabling the bluetooth tethering on the phone for the first time, I got an error message about contact Rogers. But I knew my plan should be compatible, so I just reset my phone and it worked. I know I won't be using it all the time, but I am glad that it always a viable solution.

If some one cancels there home internet they are stupid. I go through about 4 gb a day, now that's a lot, but even a low users will probably do about 3 gigs a week.

The link with the tethering instructions describes "creating a custom APN configuration file". Does this not simply bypass Rogers ability to enable/disable tethering for a user and put the control back in our hands?

A lot of low level users probably hover around 1-2 GB of usage per month

Edit: Quoted wrong post

For your uses yes it would be. I only use about 10GB a month so it would be foolish for me too but I know quite a few people who use considerably less (Hi-Speed Lite users) and aren't downloading reems of music, movies etc...

I hate hearing Rogers talking about only allowing tethering for certain data plans and possibly charging extra for it. It should be illegal for them for charge twice for the same data. If I'm paying for a certain amount of data per month, why should I have to pay extra for the 'privilege' of accessing it with different devices? It's like if my ISP charged extra for each computer I had connected to my router.

The funny thing is, before the year 2000, they did do this. They charged you per ip address being used in your home.
