Noob iPod Nano question about movies
So not having an ipod nano or regular ipod except for the iPhone myself and I have never tried to watch a movie on it I have a couple of questions.
We're getting my very technologically disinclined sister a nano for christmas however I am going to need to provide her a full step tutorial on how to upload movies to her nano once she gets it. So with that said how does one do that? What format of movies do they have to be in? Can you download *cough* any movie and convert it to the proper format? If so what conversion program should one use. Please help. Or redirect to a link that has all that info. Thanks! Angela |

It's very easy. I'd just write down or take photos of the steps she needs to take. Heres what I do for the movies I own n want to watch on my iPod.
First pop the DVD into computer (Macintosh). 2nd Open MacTheRipper and decrypt the movie to your HD. You can select FULL decryption or just the main feature. 3rd Open Popcorn 3.0 or 2.0 and select the to iPod option on the left side. Then drag the Video TS folder into the proper area (all very clearly layed out for you!) and select the compression ratio you want n voala. It'll save them to your iTunes movies folder so next time you sync your iPod it'll be there! I'd also recommend this... as it speeds up the process a LOT!The Elgato Turbo.264 video compressor card (need USB 2.0 to get full speeds) http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/main...oduct1.en.html

Forgot to mention ... MacTheRipper is a free app, just Google it.
Popcorn 3.0 or 2.0 you can Purchase from Roxio's online store as downloads. Actually I'm not sure if they still sell 2.0 but I have both 2.0 and 3.0 I like 3.0 bc you can do the same thing as we used to do with VHS cassettes... copy multiple movies onto them. Now you can copy multiple movies onto 1 DVD using this new feature from it. Of course it'll be more compressed but it's better than VHS! Oh and you can select any DivX / XviD files and make them into iPod movies using Popcorn. I did this with Jumanji and it turned out very nice

Here's one.... for PC only n it looks pretty powerful, it takes advantage of the dual core features of the new processors!
ø DVD to iPod Video Converter 400% faster ø iPod Movies for iPod Touch, Nano, Classic ø I'm sure there are other ones out there I'd say just Google it for the best price n features. Google "ipod movie converter pc"

But MacTheRipper can rip and encode the movies directly to MP4 all set for iPod, so what is the point of using Popcorn?
it just seems like a needless second step. maybe Im mising something? Sorry, Im thinking of another free program that rips and encodes in one step called Handbrake Why not just do that, is there any advantage to using mactheripper and popcorn over Handbrake?

wow... aight... Yes you've got a point! I honestly never knew about this option! Does this make it possible to encode multiple Video_TS folders one after another? If it can do that then i'll consider it bc I've had excellent speed with MacTheRipper n Popcorn 3.0

you would have to download Handbrake and MacTheRipper and decide for yourself which will work better for you.
I found handbrake to be simple and acceptable. I think MacTheRipper is better for ripping DVDs to copy to backup but even then I just downloaded Simply Burns, which also has a option to both rip and burn cd, dvd and dvd rip and disk image creation. There is always so many options with Mac software. all of the stuff I got here is on Mac OS X Software Updates and Mac OS X Downloads - VersionTracker I think handbrake is the simplist of all the iPod movie rip and encode, then you just have to put the files in the correct folders yourself. Some of the people here may have specific details of what settings work best for optimum viewing pleasure on various iPods in terms of bitrate, resolution, compression type etc.

I just used handbrake to put Finding Nemo on my new 4GB Nano, it was really very easy and and acceptably fast for me, and free ( I own the DVD). It looks amazing on the Nano. I set it for 320x240 and max bitrate of 2500, and it uses about 1.8 GB. I would be interested in seeing if I can compress the file size down and still have a good result as I'm limited to just 2 movies at a time on the nano.
