Why is this a secret?

When you upload files to ehMac, like images, for example, there is a file size limit. But, the only way to find out the limit is to upload a file and wait for the ehMac servers to choke, whereupon it then suggests the size it wants you to use.

Just let us know what you want us to do before we upload, OK? Can you pop a few extra words in the " ... Attach Files
Valid file extensions: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip ..." area? That way, I won't have to try to send you a 14MB file, which probably costs you money somehow, to see how much you want me to trim it.

It is very clearly listed: "300k file size limit".
It is even bolded

But, that is not the file size limit. Why that's even there is a mystery; it just sends people down a path to nowhere.

I'm not sure what the 300K refers to, but I can tell you it's definitely not the file size limit of a jpeg or png graphic. If you try to upload a file it will try for a while, waste your time, then report that it must be no more than 19K. Or something.

So, I repeat, what is the file size limit, and why is it a secret?

The size limit is 300k, there is NO secret. There must be some sort of problem on your end because i can upload photos just fine and so can other users (check out the gallery if you don't belive me).
Now, I can't explain why you are getting a limit of 19k, maybe you misread it and it was really telling you that you are 19k over the 300k limit???
Just to be sure I went out and took a picture of my car and uploaded it for you
It is a 288k image.

I then tried to upload a picture greater than 300k and i recieved an error message.

comprehab - The problem isn't with the gallery but the attachments on posts. Honestly I have no idea what the limits are on the the attachments for posts other then I find them too annoying to bother to make attachments instead of just linking to the Gallery or offsite server.

I also haven't been able to upload a new avatar. No matter what the size it is it always says it has to be 19k. I dont know how many times ive tried and even under 19k it wont let me upload and i get the message that it must be no larger than 19k

Oh, I see; it says 300K if you try to upload to the gallery. I was wondering where you saw that. I've never bothered to try upload photos to the gallery, and probably never will.

No, I'm talking about posts to ehMac, not the special area just for members photos. Like, for example, this very thread (check it out when you reply if you want). It mentions nothing at all about file size limits. Here is the full text:

" ...
Upload File
Use the 'Choose File' button to find the file you want to attach, then click 'Upload' to add it to this post.
Valid file extensions: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip
File to Upload:

..."

Using a 500kb image file and changing the extension I was able to gather this:

Limits:
.jpg: 293kb
.jpeg: 293kb
.zip: 97.7kb
.bmp: 19.5kb
.doc: 19.5kb
.jpe: 19.5kb
.gif: 19.5kb
.pdf: 19.5kb
.png: 19.5kb
.psd: 19.5kb
.txt: 19.5kb

---

Some of these limits are a tad absurd. When was the last or ever time you saw a pdf, psd or .doc file that was less then 19.5kb?

Hopefully when ehMax does the upgrades that are supposed to be in the next couple of months he'll adjust the limits to something a bit more applicable. So for now the workaround for pictures is to upload them to the gallery and then cross link or display them image by using the IMG tags.

Or if it's another file to find a web host somewhere willing to host it for you. eg. .Mac, your ISP, your own web server.

I've tried uploading a new avatar today with no luck. No matter what size I make it i get an error saying "the image is larger than 20000 bytes."

To be honest... I've never really looked closely at these limits before.

I've upped all the limits to 500kb.

On another note, I'm pretty certain I won't be able to get to the updates before the new year. I'm extremely busy with work right now and putting in a lot of late days. (On a bright note, things are going REALLY awesome!)

I'll see how much time I have.
