On April 11th, 1861, Confederates in South Carolina demanded the surrender of Fort Sumter. When the Union forces refused, it was fired upon, thus starting the US Civil War.
In a way, the same sorts of conflicts face the US today ............ and in a small way, Canada as well. Hopefully, our internal conflicts will always be settled without violence.

Dr. G: For my part, I am perfectly happy with the current situation in Fort Sumter and will not attempt to change the status quo. No new War Between the States on my watch.

Good to hear, Macfury. We agree once again ............ South Carolina and the states of the old Confederacy shall remain within the 50 states of the United States.
Interesting, but prior to the Civil War, people said "The United States are ...." After the way, they said, "The United States is ...."
Now, might you do something about keeping Quebec in Canada?

When I taught grade six in Waycross, Georgia, my students spoke of "the war between the states" and "the war of northern agression". It took me awhile before I realized that they were talking about the Civil War.

Dr. G: I once spent some time in a Civil War museum in Richmond and was very surprised to see a history that was different, in so many ways, from the one I was taught.

I'll take the Bloc and PQ over the FQL any day. If we can patiently listen and understand, I think, we shall be the better for it.

Watched a sizeable chunk of the PBS series. It almost felt that the outcome was determined by which side ran out of canon fodder first.
I shudder to think of the results should the US government let loose its military might on a popular uprising at home. Given our governments continuing tendency to rob from the poor to give to the banksters/MIC it is at least a slight possibility.
Ten years ago I would have said there is no way American soldiers would shoot at their own. After years of dehumanizing in Iraq and Afghanistan I am forced to at least question that belief.

Yes, I experienced the same "surprises". Still, that is what I liked about Ken Burns' "Civil War", since it presented a more accurate and balanced picture. Living in the US south for five years helped to open up my eyes to some of the reasons why non-slave owning southerners fought so hard for their state.
