Minecraft asks for unlimited access to computer?

I was trying to help my son install Minecraft, a Java-based game the other day. We were going to pay the fee for the beta version that's currently out, but before I could get to that stage, my Mac first asked permission to run an Applet--then asked if I should give the game permission to access ALL OF MY PERSONAL FILES. Of course I said NO.

"Play the online free version," I tell him. The computer again mention s the applet, and AGAIN asks permission to access ALL INFORMATION on my computer.

I thought this was a popular, mainstream game. Any insight into those requests?

Time to re-educate my kids on allowing access to their systems. They both play this game. Might not be an issue from the company behind the game but giving permission to a game that could be maliciously hacked could cause all sorts of trouble. Don't want this kind of issue sitting anywhere in my network. Hopefully it can be removed all access paths cleared out.
