PepsiCo Inc. unveiled a new bottle Tuesday made entirely of plant material that it says bests the technology of competitor Coca-Cola and reduces bottles' carbon footprint.
The bottle is made from switch grass, pine bark, corn husks and other materials. Ultimately, Pepsi plans to also use orange peels, oat hulls, potato scraps and other leftovers from its food business.
The new bottle looks, feels and protects the drink inside exactly the same as its current bottles, said Rocco Papalia, senior vice president of advanced research at PepsiCo.
"It's a beautiful thing to behold," he said. "It's indistinguishable."
An interesting twist, What is truly more environmental--making plastic out of the waste products of oil, as we currently do, or making them from plant materials that are currently not being harvested?
Interesting that the big cola companies still take deposits on bottles in poorer countries because they reckon that the people can afford to buy only the contents, but not the bottles at this point in their country's economic development. Having non-returnables in Canada is all about making the consumer buy the bottle to increase revenue.

I'll take the plant material, if it is economically feasible. The demand for plastic is increasing, and oil that would otherwise be diverted to other uses is being turned into plastic.
Interesting note though, gasoline use to be a by product too.
The Pepsi Throwback is the cane sugar version--I've seen a few cases here in Toronto, but largely in the U.S. Most pop uses fructose. The U.S. also has Throwback Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper, both infinitely superior to their current incarnations.
