Like many an ehMacian, I'm not such a fan pompous awards shows. However, I sort of have become a fan of chatting about the awards shows, making fun of some celebrities and performances, and listening to other peoples comments. (Other people's comments are the best part of the whole event).

Once in awhile, something actually comes along during the awards shows, like a performance, or acceptance speech, that is really good.

So anyways, as a lot of us like movies, I thought we'd have an ehMac Oscar thread, to pre-discuss the show, but also have an in-show commentary section. :D

I have, and it was an excellent movie. I feel it should receive all of the major awards (e.g., best picture, best actor, best supporting actor, etc). We shall see.

Watched The Social Network yesterday. I enjoyed the moviefilm but I certainly didn't think it was best picture material. It's hard to tell today in many movies if actors are even really acting, since kids at parties kind of look the same wherever you go, imho. I like Jesse Eisenberg, but it was really kind of the same character he played in Zombieland.

Yeah, it was a really good film, but I don't think it was best picture good.

Jesse played an interesting character, and it peaked my interest about Mark Zuckerburg so I watched a fair bit of YouTube videos of him giving speeches and interview. Don't think it was that good of a likeness to Mark, he doesn't really talk like Jesse Eisenberg portrayed him. Your right, the way Jesse did it is the way he's done other characters. I saw Jesse on SNL, and almost all of his characters were similar.

The Oscars is the only awards show I never miss. It's usually incredibly boring and disappointing, but I still watch. It's a tradition.

I am a huge movie buff, and most of the time they do award some deserving films.

The best picture list is impressive this year. The King's Speech is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I thought the Social Network fired on all cylinders. Not sure I agree about the dissing of Jessie Eisenberg's acting, or anyone else's in the film. I felt the performances were fantastic. They took liberties with the characters and the stories - I wasn't looking for a Mark Zuckerberg impression. I liked that he sort of built his own character out of it.

True Grit was a fantastic film as well. Inception was great. 127h was incredible. Etc. etc. It's tough to choose, but I think The King's Speech will take it.

I think we must understand that the Academy is a pretty close Knit and closed minded group, so animation will never win best film. The actors like to think they can act, so if a minor sacrifice is made , that is what gets the vote, outside of sympathy, So based on that here are my predictions:

What will win. What should have won
Best picture Winter's Bone King's Speech and Social Network [ tie ]
Best Actor Colin Firth Colin Firth
Best Supporting Actor Christian Bale Christian Bale
Best Actress Natalie Portman Hailee Stienfeld
Best Supporting Actress Melissa Leo Melissa Leo

My problem is that I have only seen "The King's Speech" and "The Fighter".

These red carpet "interviews" are very painful.

Amen, brother. XX) I don't watch them ever, for I am a mere mortal.

"The earliest known reference to walking a red carpet in literature is in the play Agamemnon by Aeschylus, written in 458 BC. When the title character returns from Troy, he is greeted by his vengeful wife Clytemnestra who offers him a red path to walk upon:

"Now my beloved, step down from your chariot, and let not your foot, my lord, touch the Earth. Servants, let there be spread before the house he never expected to see, where Justice leads him in, a crimson path."

Agamemnon, knowing that only gods walk on such luxury, responds with trepidation:

"I am a mortal, a man; I cannot trample upon these tinted splendors without fear thrown in my path." "

After the intros, it seems that most of this looks like it is totally unscripted. Kirk Douglas was natural, but it seems as if no one knows what is going to happen next.

Yes, awkward is the best word so far to describe parts of this show. Still, I like watching the clips from movies that I have seen and have not yet seen.

Nice acceptance speech by Sidler for "The King's Speech". A bit of levity, honesty and a socially significant conclusion. Kudos to him.:clap:
