Was swine flu ever a real threat?

Was swine flu ever a real threat? - Telegraph

Quote:
.... a World Health Organization 'conspiracy' that was a bonanza for drug firms

It's been a good week for drug companies and an even better one for conspiracy theorists. Last Tuesday, angered by the bumper rise in profits being reported by vaccine manufacturers as the incidence of swine flu plummets, the former head of health at the Council for Europe accused the World Health Organization of "faking" the pandemic.

....swine flu has caused just 14,000 deaths worldwide – a fraction of the number who die from seasonal flu every year

... the fatality rate has now been downgraded to a paltry 0.03 per cent, meaning that swine flu is 100 times less lethal than Spanish flu

It was obvious from the panic promotion techniques that something was fishy. Sadly when the real threat does appear, the wolf criers may very well end up costing lives.

Some of the more reasoned critiques of the Swine Flu outbreak (ie: those that do not accuse the UN of being in cahoots with big pharma), suggest that the UN's definition of pandemic simply needs to be redefined.

Personally, I believe that the UN will jump on anything that gives it a raison d'etre, and perhaps becomes a little overly zealous.

So many people, especailly high risk groups, were innoculated against the H1N1 virus, that of couse the death rates are going to be low! That's what the jab was designed to do -- save lives! Due to such a deep penetration of high risk peoples innoculated, it's impossible to truly assess the true threat.

Conspiracy theory #97584927472652

swine flu hype = Avatar 3D hype

big pharm = big ego

no pandemic = not worth the price of admission

Coincidence? I think not.

I agree with G-Mo on this point.

It's like asking if Y2K was ever a real threat? The panic caused people to get vaccines (or upgrade their systems with Y2K patches). I gotta go with "it could have been a real threat but we'll never know how severe."

I can't go along with the conspiracy theorists - it's clear they believe too much of what they see on TV.

The numbers don't bear it out. Only 1/3 of Canadians were inoculated and Canada was one of the countries with the highest inoculation rates. Even if you hit more than half the high risk groups, the number of deaths should have been far higher if the flu had been as deadly as described.

Over 70% of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians got the H1N1 shot, and we had one of the lowest rates of the virus in the country. Coincidence? Not sure, but I am glad that I got my shot in October.
