10 year old boy refuses to pleige allegiance until same-sex marriage is legal

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com - Boy won't pledge allegiance

You'll have to wait through a short commercial before you can see the video.

Tell me, is this the cutest activist you've ever seen or what?

OK - That IS cute....but seriously, that just goes to prove that we should never underestimate the power of a smart kid.

WEll I think his parents should be proud of the fact that he has taken a stand, and for justifiable reasons, and I would want him for a lawyer when he grows up... surely he will be a great Defense Lawyer!!

Call me a cynic, but his language use during that discussion was too staged and abnormal for a kid that aged. Got to believe it was staged with the parents assistance somehow. Cute, sure, but genuine ..... not so sure.

The boy has courage, since he has a reason to do this action.

When I taught high school, I told my grade 11 homeroom class that I did not want them to say the pledge of allegiance until they could explain to me what it actually meant. I recall Red Skelton doing this once on his show. This went on to a week, and we just stood in class for a couple of minutes each morning, saying nothing.

The next week, I went on and did something similar to what Red Skelton did on his show. I explained the meaning of certain words and phrases within the pledge. I said that they could now pledge to the flag each morning if they fully understood the meaning of this pledge, as was their right. One student asked if it was their right not to say anything, and I said yes, one has the freedom of speech in our country, and this entailed the right to speak up or not to speak up.

I was severly reprimanded by the principal for this action, and had the homeroom taken away from me.

YouTube - Red Skelton's Pledge of Allegiance

I have to admit that what this young boy did took far more courage than what I did way back when.

TIme does allow for certain things Marc, the right to protest being one of them. In my day, and if I were in that school, my parents would still be looking for the body.

Skelton's piece was really outstanding don't you think? He could make you laugh or cry just reading a restaurant menu or a phone book. I think the real story here is the fact that it is a story at all.

Never in a million years would I expect that to come out of Arkansas.

Mind you, the last time I was there, Ronnie Reagan was the prez. and AR was the epicenter of the bible belt.

Well he is obviously bright, skipping a grade at his age, and youngsters are fully more aware of what is going on in this world at his age than I was at the same age....

The only difference is when I asked questions my parents didn't think I should, I was never given an answer, just ... you'll know when you get older... HUH?? if I was 'thinking' enough to ask the question, I must have understood what I was asking about, so the answer should have been forthcoming... even if they didn't think I would understand, it would have given me more to think about!

I do recall a talk with my mother when I (finally) got older... she said to me 'you used to ask the darnedest things, things I didn't even know you were aware of, things you shouldn't know before you were in your teens, it used to worry me, your wanting to know so much....'

Bottom line, answer your children, age appropriate, and don't assume they don't have a clue what they are talking about... all you do is make them feel their questions have no merit, and they will shut down....

I agree. <sigh>This smells of parents-seeking-publicity. Balloon-boy redux although more politically correct.</sigh>
