"Lest we forget", and fail to teach people, both young and old, the meaning of November 11th. This is even more important when I read two articles on CBC.com today --
This just happens to be in the province of NB, but it could have been anywhere in Canada.
Growing up, Nov.11th was Armistice Day. I never appreciated the full meaning of Remembrance Day until I came here to St.John's, way back in 1977. I came to teach at Memorial University, a living monument to those Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who fought and died in the First World War. Here I learned The Dominion of Newfoundland, which was a self-governing dominion of Great Britain, suffered greater losses, on a per capita basis, than any other country during WWI. Thus, Remembrance Day is felt and understood by many here.
I fully support the move to have two minutes of silence from coast to coast to coast on Nov. 11th.

You have to be very brave to commit acts against vetrans in New Brunswick. Odd I should say such a thing.
Well in a Province with the largest army base in the land and people who normally do not take kindly to unwanted behaviour as seen in Grand Manan NB with a riot over a local crack dealer Grand Manan's war on crack - The Globe and Mail
Picking on symbols associated with vetrans is not a very smart thing to do 'round these parts.
You should be very brave or you are very stupid

BigDL, I see it as a senseless act, with no bravery inherent in this act. Just stupid and thoughtless. Paix, mon ami.

I used to work in a Long Term Facility and quite a few of the residents there were in WWII. The stories that were told to me were and are extremely moving and I shook the hand of each resident and said thank you.
One of my residents was part of the second wave of D-Day and went ashore at Juno Beach. he went through the entire war without a scratch and is currently 95 years old. Another resident joined when he was 18 and he told me that he joined because "it was the right thing to do". He told me of stories of men next to him getting killed, saying a few more feet to the left and it would have been him. The last resident was in the Dutch forces traveling on a Ship when it was bombed. 200 men lost their lives on that ship, one being the Doctor. This resident was a Medic and had to take up the role of Doctor with shrapnel in his back. Canadian Forces eventually came to the ships aid and they gave him a Canadian uniform where he fought alongside the Canadians. He was later captured and became a POW. He eventually escaped, changed his name to avoid capture again.
I will remember these men and their stories for as long as I live. I am grateful that they took the time to share their experiences with me and for their great sacrifices. They will not go forgotten, for what they did has allowed us to live in a Country that is safe and free.

The Royal Canadian Legion branch in Fredericton is going ahead with Remembrance Day services regardless. Good for them. Lest we forget.
