I agree, Chas. Granted, there was no "Mission Accomplished" banner being flown, but it was more than mere optics or a photo op, at least in my opinion.

Yep a big time smokescreen. Even better than gay marriage and abortion for diverting attention from the real issues.

I'm not so sure it was a smokescreen. I really think the issue [ in the media ] was that they were locked out of the session. The only thing they could talk about was what type of beer they had. You know, sometimes keeping the media at bay may be the correct thing to do. That way they had nothing to blow out of proportion.

If it were a smokescreen, they would be interested in keeping in going rather than having that event and then it officially disappears from the headlines ... oh, and there would have been something going on beneath it, which does not appear to be the case.
EMacMan, I think you're wrong on this one ... this is just a case of pure ol' prurient interest on the part of the easily-distracted public. It's human nature to get more upset about small things ("they STILL haven't filled in the potholes on my street!") than big things (Darfur).
Now, a SMOKESCREEN (as I understand the term) would be more something like claiming Saddam has WMD and fixating the media on the fear factor while you pass legislation that gives the executive branch *permanent* wartime-like supra-Constitutional powers ...
