Mark, they seemed to have gotten good care and regained some sense of dignity.

You know I'd love to see Cuba as the 13th province and have a strong people exchange exactly along those lines.
Be good for us all - bring some prosperity to Cuba and some energy to Canada.

MacDoc, Newfoundland and Labrador was Canada's 10th province. Who might #11 and 12 be to allow Cuba to become #13? To much time in the hammock and not enough motorcycle time will do that to the brain.
Paix, mon ami.

= shorter and faster moving supermarket check-out lines:
Ol' Lady Jones (digging through giant handbag): "Now, let's see.... I think I have a coupon for that. Hmmm.... I wonder, did I leave it at home? I remember that I was clipping it out of the paper while I was watching Barnaby Jones. That Barnaby is a handsome son-of-a-gun. Where did I put that coupon? Oh, I'll bet I left it on the table. My mind just isn't what it used to be."

I agree with MacFury (though I suspect for different reasons!). Cuba would never acquiesce to be the 13th province... not after struggling against colonialism and imperialism to throw of the yoke of both the Spanish and the Yanquis....
I've had an idea to do a documentary on Cuba's treatment of the elderly for some time now - possibly with a comparative to Nova Scotia equivalents. The "circulos de abuelos" programme and the morning exercise classes in the local parks are visible examples of why Cuba has such a large number of very senior citizens (see: 120 Years Club)
It's actually a severe demographic problem... an aging population... Cubans have a saying: "We live like the Third World, but die like the First World"... which is to say, as a society they have 1st-world health problems.

I suspect the culture are too different to mesh with any degree of... satisfaction to all parties.
