2 friends have them but as the police are moving to digital signals they are becoming limited to what they can hear. One friend bought a rather large antenna for the house...he would have gotten away with it had he been able to install it without his 4 year old daughter seeing him drop it on his wife's car.

Yup, but I also would check to see what your local cops are using frequency wise. In the GTA the cops use MDT's (digital terminals) in their cars so the amount of radio chatter has decreased dramatically. Factor in scrambled and trunked comms and things get worse. Then add in CTCSS tones and well listening can be real irritating especially the OPP.

In terms of legality, cops may say illegal but they are not. At one time in the Radio Act in Canada it was illegal to use them in a moving vehicle but I believe that is no longer the case. Otherwise all the tow truck drivers down here would be in jail.....

The radio act has always had the clause that any comms you listen to cannot be used for personal gain. Hmmm.

Well your scanner probably has a BNC connector so my first stop would be your local Ham radio dealer to see what they have.

When you say outside are you talking about a tower or pole with an antenna on top or something simple like a glassmount on a window and a lead to your scanner?

Try these places for mailorder.

radioworld.ca or durhamradio.com

Suggest you look at the following website:

RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

There will be plenty enough information to assist you.

BTW the frequency application software for loading
numerous trunk-tracking radio systems is not
generally Macintosh friendly.
