I wouldn't buy a Chevy no matter how cool the car looked. ("quality issues")

Of course you could be wrong

Proprietary study results are based on experiences and perceptions of owners surveyed in February – April 2008.
I almost dropped into a Chev dealer to put my name on the list.

Unless someone else pops up with a better PHEV the Volt is potentially a no brainer.

This is a much better configured vehicle than the prototype.

Oh, not 90 days! I think even the worst car on the planet can survive 90 days without losing a part.

I have a friend who bought a brand new Dodge Aspen back in 1978. He would strongly disagree.

The initial quality of new vehicles improved substantially in 2008, according to the recently released J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study. Substantial gains were made by nearly three-quarters of the 36 ranked nameplates, and the overall average quality rating improved to 118 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership - down from 125 PP100 in 2007.

The study captures problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories - quality of design and defects and malfunctions. Initial quality has been shown over the years to be an excellent predictor of long-term durability, according to Power.

........

In past years, automakers have frequently struggled to achieve very high initial quality with new models," said Sargent. "With product launches and redesigns often being problematic for manufacturers from a quality standpoint, it is particularly impressive that the Chevrolet Malibu and Infiniti EX-Series achieve such high levels of quality that they receive awards in their launch year."

Canadian Auto Dealer - Initial Quality ratings are up...

I would expect issues with early adopters but that's part of the fun. This is the 100th Anniversary for Chevy and they are betting the company on this ........I'd expect a pretty slick vehicle.

"The Volt is symbolic of what General Motors stands for today. Certainly that means cutting-edge technology, exciting design, fast and efficient product development," Wagoner said, before Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman for product development, rolled out in the Volt. "The Volt symbolizes General Motors' commitment to the future," Wagoner said.

GM calls the Volt, viewed as potentially industry-changing technology, an extended-range electric vehicle. It is expected to drive at least 40 miles on an electric charge and about 400 miles using an onboard gas-burning generator to maintain the charge on its lithium-ion battery. The electric motor alone drives the wheels.

The Volt has been closely watched since GM unveiled its design concept during the 2007 North American International Auto Show.

Lyle Dennis, a neurosurgeon who started and maintains GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric Car Site, said Tuesday that traffic for his Volt fan Web site was so heavy that his site crashed early in the day.

"The traffic is just through the roof," he said while trying to fix his site remotely from the GM Renaissance Center following the unveiling.

Toyota has the best quality. Period. That said I would purchase a Volt to support GM's struggle to get back to profits the *right* way. No more muscle cars boys.

My 01 Suzuki Grand Vitara Limited 4 x 4 has been bulletproof.

That being said, Chevy's build quality is very high and this is one car I would buy in a heartbeat.

And speaking of bulletproof, GM's 3.8 litre V-6 was the best engine produced since the mid 80s. Critics of Chevys simply don't know the vehicle or its history.

Except for the fact that JD Power is not a quality assurance company, but an advertising firm. The "Prize" just means that the company paid for it.

I think the main problem is that GM has a bad track record - just look to the fact that they took back all of their EV1 cars, and even resorted to stealing them from owners that didn't want to give them up, and did that even while the cars were under lease. How long will a Volt last in one's driveway before GM steals the car, along with your personal items and CD's?

As for the Malibu - they really do have to stick to measuring customer satisfaction at the 90 day mark, since it takes about nine months or so before the paint begins to shale off in great chunks.

I owned a Chevy - got the T-Shirt - and I will never go back to those crudmobiles. I have never seen a vehicle with so many crazy repeating problems, like the new alternator one needs every year because they are the cheapest crud they could find at the lowest possible cost. I'd rather have a Dodge Aspen, far more reliable...

Americans cars have been catching up in quality terms with the Japanese in the last few years. That huge Gap has been narrowing a lot lately. The second someone makes an electric Honda element type, i would get one.
