Selling stuff

Where do you guys sell stuff now? Stuff as in things you want to get rid of around the house, not as a seller of collectibles, etc. as a professional merchant.

eBay had its best days pre-2005, and it's become an unfriendly place for small sellers. I was thinking Craig's List, and got rid of a few things using the ads. This is stuff I gave out for nothing, and people had to pick it up. People made it their business to show up or not at all if it suited them. Even if you're giving it out, they give you agita.

What auction sites are good alternatives to high fee-bay?

For the stuff you are giving away, I would have suggested freecycle dot org, but you're absolutely right about the free stuff. If it's free, people don't care and they are convinced that your time is worth nothing and that you don't care.

So try Craigslist again, or perhaps your local university or college has a place to post things, but sell things for a nominal amount, $5-$20 for what would have otherwise been free. Get the buyer's contact information so they know you are serious, and set a firm time for pickup.

If you were in Canada, I would have said post stuff on ehMac in the miscellaneous section. But you never know; we're an eclectic lot and it would surprise you what some of us would have shipped to where we are...

I can offer ehMacers a few free retro Mac things if they just pay for shipping. I should compile a list of the stuff. I'm good to trade with, and I'm not going to steal your postage (this would not be lucrative enough for me).

I gave a hot tub infested with carpenter ants away for free a couple of weeks ago, it's amazing what people will take for free.

Oh...I used craigslist and kijiji.

Craigslist can be full of scammers and I have never had any luck selling anything on it. I don't know if Kijiji is available to you or not, but if it is I highly recommend it as just about everything I ever posted there sold and quite quickly.

I simply donated my old computer in working order to the Sally Ann thrift store.

It depends somewhat on where you live. I have successfully used Craig's List, Kijiji, and UsedVictoria.com(which is local, obviously). I have had very little success on eBay. I have found that using the aforementioned lists stuff can take quite a while to sell.
