Red face Mailing Lists (free, preferably)?

I feel rather guilty asking for this - our organisation has been a member of the local Community Network almost since the day it was born, and our website is hosted there. We also have two mailing lists.

Unfortunately, it has been hammered in the past year with incoming spam. They've thrown extra servers at it and improved filtering, etc., but with limited resources they are simply overmatched.

I receive - easily - 200 junk messages / day on the main list, which they do not filter (again, resources). I somewhat resolved this problem by setting up a Gmail account which POPs the email, and has a wicked junk filter. So that's been manageable.

But - the junk mail filtering process has mail in a queue that can take well over 24 hours (after a big attack) to deliver... and our members find this is causing interruptions to our discussions and planning efforts. We need more reliable email delivery.

So - where to go? I've done a quick Google, without much luck, looking for mailing lists that aren't of the Yahoo! mode (those without Yahoo! accounts used to have difficulty accessing some features of the Yahoo! discussion lists / groups - still true?) Any other recommendations?

TIA
M

Why not just set the list so that first posts (let's say the first 3) must be approved by a moderator? That seems to kill the spammers pretty quick.
