Where to find a two pronged power cord?

Where does one get get a Standard PC type power cord without a ground?

Something with three prong female end and a 2 pronged male end or is it safe to take a regular one and cut off the center ground?

jonesy: whether it's safe depends on what you're doing with it. Why do you want to cut it off?

New TV syndrome... Just got a new LCD TV and want to plug the power into our DVR so that one button turns off both devices. I was able to do this with my old TV as it's power cable was only two pronged. The new TV uses a standard PC type power cord which has three prongs (and thus doesn't fit into the cable box).

Fellows makes an adapter.

In case they're illegal, You should be able to make your own from parts readily available from Cdn Tire or home centres.

The "proper" way to do this is with an adapter. The ones I have are little grey blocks about the size of an extension cord plug. The female side is 3 pronged and the male side is two with a short (~5cm) green cord with a connector to fit under a handy screw to provide ground contiguity. I got mine at CrappyTyre. I say "proper", though some would argue, because of the ability to connect the ground - a safety issue.

Tearing the third prong off a standard 3 wire cord breaks the ground path which is unsafe. Your insurance company will frown if that "modded" cord is ever involved in a fire, unlikely as that might be. In my home, around kids and family, "unlikely" isn't good enough. YMMV.

HOWEVER: occassionally I have in the past provided links to instructions or illustrations. I will not do so in future, in fact I will not be offering helpful advice for free just to have my words pirated until the sleazy ad linking desists. I will, however, answer PMs.

Perhaps if he replaced the main receptacle with a GFI, he could use all the two prongs he wants.

I agree. Go with the adapters. I think I bought mine at Home Depot.

In this order.

Turn off breaker or remove fuse for the outlet.

Confirm that it is indeed off.

Remove plug. It should have 2 wires attached and one should be white. There should also be a metal box behind the outlet. Do a resistance test between box and white wire. It should be zero assuming it is a grounded metal box.

ONLY IF all of the above is so: just replace the 2 prong outlet with a 3 prong one. Black wire goes to the side labeled black, white goes to the side labeled white. Green is attached to the metal box.

Find someone with solid electrical knowledge confirm that it is connected correctly before attaching your computer to it.

If you are at all uncomfortable with any of this I would highly recommend paying an electrician to do this. It is a very quick job and should be covered by his basic minimum fee. Your safety is worth much more than that minor expense.

If you must use an adapter it is critical that it is plugged into the receptacle correctly. You will need to determine which side is ground on the outlet and also which prong is ground for the adapter and then insert the adapter ground to ground.

Guys, you understand that the female socket is on the Motorola receiver and not the wall? I'm not planning on opening up my HD receiver.
