I awoke this morning to find my internet speed to be lagging. When I did a speed test at Speakeasy - Speed Test I found my speeds to be (approx.) 2500kbps down/ 400kbps up. Speeds indicative of a 3mbps profile. After 2 agonizing hours with tech support they have set up an appointment for a technician to test my line.
Here's the rub. A technician checked my line within the last month and all was well. Also, my GF has Sympatico on a different line in our house and her speeds have changed to the same profile.
Both of us have the 5mbps profile and have always gotten (approx) 4200/400.
What gives? Has anyone else been downgraded in the Toronto (or otherwise) area in the last little while?
Both levels 1 & 2 of tech support claimed nothing had been changed in my profile. It took level 3 to come clean and say they downgraded me because of an 'unknown issue'. We are not heavy downloaders etc. I'm wondering what this issue could be......

5144 download and 544 upload on Speakeasy (from/to St.John's, NL and New York City). I should be getting 5000 and 500, so things are better than fine here as of 540PM my time. Hope this helps, mrj.
I have a Sympatico DSL account with Aliant.

Does anyone know what "speakeasy" is actually measuring?
I get quite different results depending on which server I test with - from 4600 to less than 2600 b/s; almost a 2:1 ratio.
That definitely does not reflect what my DSL connection is doing - it should be much more consistent.
So after spending two hours on the phone with tech support and a half day for a repairman NOTHING was wrong with my line. The only upside is that they upgraded me from a 5 to a 6 mbps service for my lowly $37.95/ month.
Now I have to repeat the same steps to get my GF's service upstairs done as Bell downgraded her too.
I would LOVE to know why they did this. Too bad I hate Rogers equally.....
My download speeds with Sympatico have been between 1.84 Mbps up to 4.65 (once), and upload 151 Kbps up to 497. Average downloads being about 2.70 Mbps, instead of "up to 5.00"...
I have checked with Speed Meter sugested by Sympatici Tech. Advisor: 2Wire.com: Home
I live in central Etobicoke, had my phone line checked by Bell ($80), I'm using SpeedStream 5200 modem and paying Bell (1 year contract) $37.40 incl. taxes.

I do not know if it affects all other Sympatico users, but Bell did downgrade both the speed and download cap of their Lite package. They did this even to customers that were still under contract. (They are not offering those contracts anymore, they are pushing people into month by month use, at least in The Hammer.) My girlfriend's "Lite" account was recently "downgraded", measured in real speed, from 30kB/s to 15kB/s; and the download cap reduced from 10GB/Month to 1GB/Month. Oh, and for this "improvement", they are jacking the rate from $19/Month to $27/Month, plus the $10/Month for the modem...
They are certainly out to gouge their customers! Should be on Teksavvy quite soon, once the dumb Bell contract expires. I can't wait, because then, I'll be able to use my Apple at her place, rather than having to use this crummy Windoze Interblech Exploder...
Typical of Sympatico! A few years ago, I had to "fight" with them every month as it seemed that on or near the first of the month, my service slowed down to a crawl. Each and every time I called to close the account, the speed "miraculously" returned to normal.....
