Now that the Canadian dollar is so high

Anyone know of any outfits in the USA that would allow you to pickup items ordered online? i.e. I buy a computer from Apple.com and then drive down to the USA to pick it up. I am actually looking at home audio products and yes I will be honest and pay any duty and taxes that are applied at the border

Thanks,

RtC

I know that you can have things delivered to the UPS Store in Ogdensburg (just across the border from Prescott). You have it sent there, and UPS Store charges you $5 to hold it for you. I've had things held there for a few weeks before picking them up at no charge. If you do a lot of this, it's cheaper to pay the $20/month for an actual mailbox.

I'm sure other UPS Stores do the same.

I second what BikerBob said - I've done that also.

Thanks for the pointers... I emailed the UPS store and they got back to me within a few hours. They do offer the service but they charge a 5$ a day holding fee. I might just be better to get a mailbox at some point if I am expecting to get more than a few packages in one month. 5$ a day, per package, can add up quickly. I see that there is a UPS in Burlington if not I might try doing the same thing with a MailBoxes Etc. in Plattsburgh. A little bit closer to Montreal...

Price tags on cars break the law, lawsuit says

Globe and Mail Update

A Toronto law firm has launched a class-action lawsuit against major auto-makers and dealers alleging they have conspired to fix car prices 25 per cent to 35 per cent higher in Canada than in the United States, violating competition and consumer protection laws in the process.

In an apparent effort to capitalize on a new focus on Canadian-U.S. price differentials spurred by the loonie's recent rocket-ride to parity with the U.S. dollar, Juroviesky and Ricci LLP said Wednesday that it has filed the suit in Ontario Superior Court and that it will cover any Canadian residents that have bought or leased an automobile from any of the defendants — or planned to — between 2005 and 2007.

The firm alleges in a statement of claim filed with the court that the auto makers sought to prevent Canadian consumers from taking advantage of lower U.S. prices by ordering their U.S. dealers not to sell vehicles into Canada “under pain of charges and potential loss of franchise or desired car allotments such as Corvettes.”

As well, some have ordered their Canadian dealers not to honour warranties on cars purchased in the United States, forcing the purchasers to pay for all repairs, the suit alleges.

In turn, some dealers have forced car buyers to sign “no-export” clauses, the statement of claim says.

“These inter-company agreements and directives are aimed at having the effect of unreasonably enhancing the price of [the] defendants' product in Canada to the detriment of all Canadian consumers of [the] defendants' product,” it contends.

The announcement comes just a day after high-end sports car maker Porsche Cars North America Inc. said it will “listen to the market” and lop 10 per cent off Canadian prices for its 2008 models.

Not too long ago cars were much cheaper in Canada and U.S. buyers would cross the border to save a bundle. The same 'problem' happened with dealers too. Hooray for repeats!

At that time, the dollar was not at par - don't you think this is different?

The problem then was that the C$ was so low that a given car was much cheaper, in US$, in Canada than in the U.S. Now the US$ is so low that a given car is much cheaper in C$, in the U.S., than in Canada.
