Saliva painkiller beats morphine
PARIS, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Saliva from humans has yielded a natural painkiller up to six times more powerful than morphine, Paris researchers say.
The substance, dubbed opiorphin, may spawn a new generation of natural painkillers that relieves pain as well as morphine but without the addictive and psychological side-effects of the traditional drug.
One gram of opiorphin injected into rats' paws for every 2.2 pounds of body weight achieved the same painkilling effect as 3 grams of morphine, NewScientist News Service reports.
The substance was so successful that the rats needed six times as much morphine as opiorphin to render them oblivious to the pain of standing on needle points.
"Its pain-suppressive effect is like that of morphine,

That part in bold is really disturbing.
Can you imagine having doing that to rats as your job?
I'd never be able to sleep at night.

Sounds like a very interesting drug though.

Have you ever had any kind of medical procedure or has anyone you love or has anyone you know? Then you or someone you know and/or love probably owes their life to people "doing something like that to rats as their job"....

Boy those two teenagers on the train this morning who were exchanging saliva non-stop for fifteen minutes must have been so glad to have rid themselves of their pounding early morning headaches without having to resort to commercial painkillers! Who says today's youth lack common sense.

I don't buy that that particular experiment was necessary. Vivisection should only be used as a last resort. I don't think that experiment was ethical but then testing pain killers on live animals is pretty grizzly to begin with.
