For those who believe that this is still an American-led mission and, therefore, morally tainted, you will be happy to note that NATO is taking over:
Quote:
NATO assumed military control of eastern Afghanistan, taking over from the U.S.-led coalition that toppled the Taliban in 2001 and completing an expansion of the alliance's mission across the whole country.
Whitewash doesn't cover up a very suspect campaign resulting from US failure to complete and US diversion of resources to the idiocy going on in Iraq which has it's own lessons of violence begetting violence.
Had the Al Qaeda problem been pursued in full - including the Pakistan aspect then it's likely the situation as it exists would not be menacing and the world support would have been there.....it was and the US squandered it.
I suggest instead of trying to justify military intervention by any means you have a look at the PBS Frontline special of The Return of the Taliban and THEN tell me this is a winnable situation and that we are getting the whole story. In my mind we are not.
For many of us who watched in dsmay and had friends killed in Vietnam this is a a smaller but similarly "unwinnable" conflict.
I do NOT see this as case like Bosnia which was clearly a NATO mandate and is slowly moving towards some resolution.
Afghanistan needs to be settled by the regional players.....NATO is NOT a regional player.

IronMac, you will never change the minds of those here who believe it is a US mission. They are blind to any other opinion and so set in there beliefs that you cannot change their views.
You can lead a horse to water, but . . .
Perhaps we should establish a gun registry in Afghanistan?

Whether WE or, NATO, believe it is US-led or otherwise is irrelevant. The question is, how does it look to the people who's hearts and minds we are supposed to be winning?

It's unwinnable if we do not try every option and cut out.
As for regional players, which do you trust? The Iranians? The Russians? The Pakistanis? The Chinese?
