Windows - can anyone offer insight

I'm using a Compaq laptop for some work I'm doing. It sits on a wire-rack shelf - so I'm pretty sure it's not overheating.

But - about once a day as I'm working, it will decide on it's own to "hibernate"

At first I thought maybe I'd been too long between mouse clicks or something, but just now, I was clicking the mouse when it announced it was going to hibernate.

Is this strange behavior for WinXP?

I've restarted to make sure I've saved and so on. Should I be worried?

No, it's business as usual kind of behaviour.

Some Windows machines never fail, some always do.

You might have a virus--actually, you probably do, but I mean you might have one causing this problem in particular.

There might be power issues, or RAM issues, but simply visiting the wrong webpage could infect your computer with a virus that will make it behave this way.

If your computer still acted like this after a clean re-install of the system software, I'd look for other issues. But keep in mind that most PCs are infected within a few minutes of connecting to the net, no matter what antiviral they have running.

Thanks. I rarely let it connect to the net and have been running Norton until the trial of norton ran out. I'll install AVG and see if I can find anything.

Can't take it down to reinstall today - almost at the end of some major work with a deadline and don't want to interfere with that.
