This is more of a rant than anything, but nothing annoys me more than people leaving crap all over the road, just waiting for you to drive over it - especially broken glass from smashed beer bottles. Since I purchased my Mazda3 6 months ago, I've run over broken bottle glass 2-3 times. Thankfully, I've never ruptured any of my tires from it, but I know friends/siblings who haven't been so lucky in that regard. I ended up getting "Tire Hazzard" extended warranty from my dealer for my tires for $40, after learning if I run over glass, and my tires are damaged, my dealer won't cover the repair unless I have this extra warranty. And getting a new tires, plus paying labour to have it swapped is anything but cheap for me.
Why do people have this urge to litter the road with crap? Especially items that can flatten tires. I blame stupid university students - no offense to students on ehMac. The most crap found on roads in Halifax are the roads connecting buildings on campus.

I wouldn't worry about the glass, small glass shards shouldn't bother your tires as they are to brittle to puncture today's tires - I would worry about the other stuff on the road though. I have had flat tires from a wide range of things - roofing nails and screws being the most plentiful, but I have gotten flats from a drill bit, a lug nug bolt, and the wierdest one - a spoon ...

Halifax does not have the only litterers Lars. The folks who live on our crescent regularly toss their fast food bags out the window in front of our house. Sigh.

It's because those people don't care, they are dirty, insufferable, ignorant pigs with no respect for others or their property or the planet they live on. Life is all about them.
Littering is something that drives me around the bend.

Not sure if they're dirty, considering they did get rid of their garbage.
The general list of traits sounds like people in general, for whatever pet peeves everyone has.
I could see this being worse near universities and, disproportinately, caused by students. More binge drinking, more drugs, more parties and being relatively young combine into some strange behaviour (aka fun, if I remember those years correctly).
One thing that annoys me is people who smoke in cars but tangle the cigarette outside (ps, you still stink no matter what), and then drop the butt on the road.
if you want to freak someone out - at red lights, quickly get out and give back the butt - ....

OH! thats my favorite! especially when they throw it back at you and it hits your windshield! who doesnt love that!

No kidding. This past summer I had gone through a Wendy's drive thru (yeah, I know but I was between calls and in a hurry) in Mississauga and was sitting in my van eating my lunch. This young woman in a Cavalier exits the drive thru and upon unwrapping her straw just tosses the paper out the window. Are people really that ignorant? She almost hit a parked car when I yelled at her asking her why her parents hadn't raised her right.
I see these pissant teeneagers do it all the time with the cellophane from their cigarette packages; saunter down the street, pull out the new pack of smokes, peel the wrapper off and let it fall to the ground. One guy looked completely shocked when I retrieved his garbage, caught up to him and handed it to him saying. "Here, I think you dropped this, you ignorant f*ck. Don't do it again."
This is an issue of respect, plain and simple. It seems that most people today have a definite lack of respect for anything that isn't theirs.
As a university student, I think I'm qualified to say that I hate the laziness of my generation. Don't get me wrong, I'm a lazyass myself, but in my own home when I can afford to be. But honestly, is it so hard to walk the few extra feet to the trash bin? Fortunately a lot of my friends fall into the same way of thinking, so we're pretty neat, but the absolute disinterest some people show in caring for the planet baffles me. We only have one Earth.
Like someone mentioned with the cigarettes before, the littering of them is even worse. I asked someone before if they throw a bunch of popcans/banana peels/whatever on the street on a regular basis (after seeing them chuck a cigarette) and got a reply of 'Oh, but it's not garbage. It's just a cigarette."
