"Domain Registry" Scam?

I just received two weird phone calls, both from "domain registry" claiming that the needed my fax number as two of my domains were about to expire. Now, I now my domain names aren't about to expire, it was odd. Very authoritative individual, kept on message about wanting my fax number. Initially it seemed legit, but then I thought, "Um, why don't you just email it to me?" He said, "Our main server is down." I said OK, give me a web address and I'll have a look." He said, "Our server is down." He had the physical address I used to have for my domain and was using that as some sort of authentication tool, when anyone can get that. I started to get very suspicious, and said I wasn't giving him any information without verifying who he was... I then told him I would only respond to an email, and he said, OK, he would send it out, and hung up. Ten minutes later he calls back, I repeat my request for verification, it goes around, very pushy but always sort of professional... Finally I ask him for a number to call back, he doesn't have it, I say, "You're a scammer." He says no, I finally hang up on him, still sort of thinking it might be legit.

As I write this it's increasingly clear he was a scammer of some type, probably hoping to get a credit card number for a bogus renewal. Some sort of serious accent but decent english (no surprise there, lots of call centres and Canadians have accents). No caller ID. So maybe watch out if you get a call on this, both my domains were .com domains... I was going to ask if there was any chance of this being legit, but in retrospect if it talks like a scam, well...

The 'Domain Registry of Canada" has been in trouble before. They have gotten into trouble for having their stationary impersonate that of the Federal Government.

Ooh they are on my %@&t list.

They're one of those that send out invoices in the mail that look official for renewal, but really its an authorization to switch registrar to them.

Then when you try to reposess it they charge large fees for the "service" of switching it back...

Right, scam. I thought some of the more computer-involved around here might have heard of them. I hope nobody gets stuck by it, I'm usually pretty cynical and this was good...
