I'm doing a project for my very last course (!!!) and as part of the research I'm conducting a survey on how Canadians feel about Ontario. The survey results will be used towards a redesign. I don't want to get into too many details about what I'm redesigning since I don't want to influence the answers. Suffice to say the results will be used for educational purposes only and when I present the work to the class, I will not include any names.
So if you're bored... Feel free to answer as many or as few questions as you like.
General Questions:
How do you feel about Ontario in relation to the other provinces?
Do you feel there is any specific Ontario-related person, event, thing, etc, that has created great pride for the province?
Anything that has created great shame?
Is there any particular historical event or reference that you feel has greatly influenced the shaping of the culture in Ontario?
Do you feel Ontario is a leader in any particular field?
Do you feel Ontario is trailing behind others in a particular field?
How do you feel about Ontario in relation to the other provinces?
Well, there's more people here than anywhere else. If I had to define it in terms of its deficiencies, Ontario is:
1) not as pretty as BC
2) not as inexpensive to live in as AB
3) not as lively as QC
4) not as charming as in NL, PEI and NS (plus there's less fishing too)
But probably better to live here than MB, SK, YT, NWT, and NU.
Do you feel there is any specific Ontario-related person, event, thing, etc, that has created great pride for the province?
There are many famous persons from Ontario, especially in science. This is not surprising considering its population, and I have to say, the admirable Anglo-Saxon work ethic of previous generations of Ontarians.
Anything that has created great shame?
The idea of Toronto and overadulation by the media. Note I don't actually hate the city itself or its inhabitants.
Is there any particular historical event or reference that you feel has greatly influenced the shaping of the culture in Ontario?
United Empire Loyalists. It's so very British here. There are vestiges of Englishness everywhere.
Do you feel Ontario is a leader in any particular field?
Ontario is a leader in many fields, it's hard to pick one.
Do you feel Ontario is trailing behind others in a particular field?
Yes.
For those who are not from Ontario:
How do you feel about Ontario?
I like living in small cities in Ontario, and I appreciate the genuine friendliness of the people.
How do you think Ontario residents see you?
Just like any other person.
Are you proud to not be from Ontario?
Yes. Ontario is the sort of place you want to live in, but never want to outwardly associate yourself with. I don't know why... call it an irrational inhibition.
How do you feel about Ontario in relation to the other provinces?
I'd be happier if Canada was divided into 5 economic regions - right now it's ridiculous that Ontario and PEI are on equal terms as provinces - it distorts things enormously and makes necessary restructuring for regions difficult.
Do you feel there is any specific Ontario-related person, event, thing, etc, that has created great pride for the province?
Originally embracing the Niagara power system and creating a good manufacturing base to go along with a resource and agricultural base. The educational system originally and it's support of Federalism. Our post war infrastructure.
Anything that has created great shame?
The current power infrastructure and it's handling and future planning is far behind. The state of Toronto infrastructure and quite frankly we need a number of weeks off from being money bags for the country.
Is there any particular historical event or reference that you feel has greatly influenced the shaping of the culture in Ontario?
Ontario - culture......?????? Perhaps what shaped current Ontario is a combination of NAFTA and Bill 101. Embracing multiculturalism for Toronto - 160 languages and counting.
Do you feel Ontario is a leader in any particular field?
Damping weight for Confederation. Multiculturalism for the world.
Do you feel Ontario is trailing behind others in a particular field?
Power infrastructure, taming speculation.
For those who are from Ontario:
How do you see Ontario?
The BIG engine that could that is getting rusty.
How do you feel other provinces see us?
900 lb gorilla - too urban
Are you proud to be from Ontario
Yes

How do you feel about Ontario in relation to the other provinces?
Due to its size - geographic, population and economic - it should be a leader, but it isn't.
Do you feel there is any specific Ontario-related person, event, thing, etc, that has created great pride for the province?
Not really.
Anything that has created great shame?
Aside from the Many Laffs, I mean Maple Leafs, no.
Is there any particular historical event or reference that you feel has greatly influenced the shaping of the culture in Ontario?
I suppose you'd have to go back to the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists for that, though recent immigration (the last 20, maybe 30 years) is finally turning Toronto into an interesting city.
Do you feel Ontario is a leader in any particular field?
See answer to Question 1.
Do you feel Ontario is trailing behind others in a particular field?
No, at least not to a serious degree.
For those who are from Ontario:
How do you see Ontario?
It's OK. Though where I live is better than OK.
How do you feel other provinces see us?
Fat, lazy and content with the status quo.
Are you proud to be from Ontario?
Not particularly. Actually I'm from Manitoba, though I've lived in Ontario about 20 years. I take more pride in being from Wpg., so I answered the following questions too.
For those who are not from Ontario:
How do you feel about Ontario?
It's OK.
How do you think Ontario residents see you?
I don't think Ontarians stop very often to think about people from other provinces. When they do, they probably think in terms of stereotypes, much like other people think of Ontarians.
Are you proud to not be from Ontario?
I'm proud to be from Wpg., which is not necessarily the same as being proud not to be from Ontario.
