Mark, don't laugh, but it might be an interesting way to protect your iPod. There have not been the overt thefts of iPods here in St. John's, but I have heard of muggings merely for the iPod in other larger North American cities. Que lastima.

Hi Marc, yeah... I think it's becoming quite a phenomenon... Apple's products are contributing to a spike in the crime rate. Someone will probably land SSHRC funding to prove the correlation!

The day I bought my Shuffle, I came home and turned on the evening news... first story: A guy was mugged in downtown Halifax, all they took was his iPod. Yikes.

Last year there was a company that sold that conversion, they sell you one of the yellow sony sports walkman that was popluar in the late 80's early 90's. they took out the internals and retrofit it to fit a 3g iPod. You could also buy just the internals if you already had one of the sony sports walkman.

My son was told not to wear the white iPod ear buds, since that is a give away for having an iPod. He uses whatever is handy, but has experienced no trouble with owning the iPod.

Well... I'm getting rid of the white earbuds ASAP, but for comfort reasons, not anti-crime. Still, I'll wear it on the bus, but not while walking home at night. Too easy for someone to come up behind you as you're bopping along.... I'm going to have to pick up a sportsuit for it, though, as the gym is where it's going to bet the most use (not much chance of someone mugging me there!).

Is this really such a big issue? I've walked around some pretty...unsavory...parts of Toronto with my white headphones quite clear. I never got the feeling that there was any problem. And I'm a far cry from a big guy, so I look like an easy target. Am I just asking for it?
