Just had a day off and watched the entire Avro Arrow docu-drama created by Dan Aykdroyd (one hell of a Canadian !)
What kind of Canada would we see today if the Arrow had not been cancelled? Wherever Diefenbaker is, I hope he is uncomfortable. I don't know if Canada would have become a world class arms dealer, but I sure as hell would have liked to see the Canada that the Avro Arrow would have brought to fruition. Vive le Canda libre! Je me souviens. |

What would have happened? - the US may not have made it to the moon. Many of the best went to the Apollo program.
WE might have had an aerospace industry much earlier. Pompous sellout.

As a born and raised in Saskatchewan Canadian, I must say MACSPECTRUM that I am disappointed, no appalled to hear you use that kind of language to refer to a former Prime Minister, and it is especially disappointing at this time of year.
To ask that he rot in hell is repulsive to those of us who knew and loved him for the man he was, and I knew him personally. I dare say had I mentioned anything near as nasty about the leaders involved in the current situation in the Ukraine, you would have held the same view of me. I respectfully request you remove that distasteful thread topic.

I understand and appreciate that J. Diefenbaker was a friend (altho' a policitally expident one0 of Ukrainian-Canadians, nonetheless, he crippled the growth of Canada.
My verdict stands. Whether or not he uttered those now, so infomous words, "Shliak trafit" (Damn them all !) when speaking to a Ukr.-Cdn. conditingent during an election. Sinc, these are not easy words for me to type, but I am a Canadian, first and foremost, and J. Difenbaker, certainly was not. I stand by my words. |

Ah Dief - I think he had a lot of pressure. Sure, I'm disappointed about the Arrow but Dief had a lot to deal with & it probably wasn't an easy decision for him.

And obviously not easy to type. From the spelling and the words used, I suspect the wine might be talking tonight. In the spirit of the season, I shall forget you used those words. Merry Christmas to you. Cheers

I don't like to judge any one on the basis of one decision, especially a decision that in retrospect seems wrong but at the time was at best a split decision.
Dief was a proud Canadian, and far more willing to proclaim it than any previous prime minister and certainly far more willing than Conservative prime minister since. Not only did he give Natives the vote, he appointed the first woman cabinet minister and passed the Bill of Rights, which set the stage for the Charter of Rights 20 years later. He also opened China to western trade by being the first to sell them wheat and he (not Pearson) appointed the Royal Commission on Health Services which gave Pearson the opening to introduce medicare. In my opinion he was not the best prime minister we've had, but he did much better than some people give him credit for.

Do you really think that the government getting into a business venture is a good thing? I like to think that they got out before they lost any more money.

Dief was a great Canadian to be sure, I can remember being face to face with the man in the foyer of the Besborough Hotel in Saskatoon. I cannot stand to see him dis'ed. There's no way he'd do anything adverse to Canada knowingly. He loved this country.
