Olympic security officials in Athens, Greece conceded today that they had failed to notice a giant wooden horse that had been wheeled to within meters of the Olympic stadium sometime late last week.
The sudden appearance of the gigantic horse, which was said to measure over one hundred cubits in width, has raised fresh concerns that the security around the Olympic complex might be more porous than originally thought.
"When you're spending over $1.5 billion in security, quite frankly, somebody shouldn't be able to wheel a giant wooden horse right up to your stadium," said one U.S. official today.
But Thanasis Kyriakou, who is coordinating the security efforts for the 2004 Olympics, said that the horse, while of unknown origin, posed no serious security threat to the Games, which are set to begin today. "If anything, this gigantic horse is only bringing more attention to the Olympics," he said. "I see this horse as a tremendous gift."
Sharply disagreeing with Mr. Kyriakou is NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol, who said that the unplanned presence of a gigantic horse could ruin his network's coverage of the Games.
"It's wrecking all of our camera angles," Mr. Ebersol said. "Everywhere you look, there's that dopey horse in the background."
For his part, Mr. Kyriakou believes that the enormous horse could enhance viewership of the Olympics and has even recommended wheeling the mysterious wooden structure into the stadium itself.
"I say let the horse in," he said. "What's the worst that could happen?"
Er...have they checked out THE INTERIOR of the damned thing??
COMPLETELY?

Scuse me for pointing this out...but wasn't it actually the GREEKS who parked that giant wooden horse in front of the walls of the Trojan city of Troy? Whom they were at war with, at the time? And wasn't it full of GREEK soldiers who were looking for a novel way of invading the capital city of said sworn enemy? (Which, I might point out, is several nautical leagues from the city of Athens.)
Perhaps the Greeks have very short memories. Or are not terribly familiar with one of the more famous chapters in the history of their ancient land.
Or....maybe...some people here are not terribly well versed in the classics. Or are prone to scrambling historical fact.
Michael Moore would be proud.
Just making a point about how terribly tangled we can get when we begin to scramble history in the manner of Moore and Co. (Which seems to be in vogue with some people these days, BTW.)
" Say..remember when France invaded Germany and kicked their sorry butts??!! Well, it's happening again these days.....no...wait...hang on a moment...THAT's not it! It's all so terribly confusing!)"
Ferget 'bout the horse...they failed to notice a guy in tights and a tutu do a chicken flip off the Olympic 3m diving board.

The "truly noble cause" here is to end the constant cycle of violence that characterised that region for so very long...and was beginning to spill out and affect all of the rest of us in the more civilised nations of the world.
It has NOTHING to do with oil.
As near as I can tell, the US has not "Stolen" a single drop of Iraqi oil so far. And have no intention of doing so.
In fact...they are likely to be buying said oil at world prices from the IRAQI PEOPLE in the very near future. And, in doing so, they will be providing them with a serious influx of real money that the Iraqis can then use to repair and rebuild their country. Instead of paying for dozens of brand new lavish palaces for a psychopathic tyrant like Saddam. While the children of the country starved to death.
Which is exactly what the USA is so famous for doing with all of it's former adversaries. Like Japan and Germany and China, et al.
They turn them into rich and healthy trading partners with vibrant economies and they also make them into self-determining democracies. With a free vote for everyone of voting age.
At that point, the former enemy is no longer at all concerned with attacking ANYONE. They are much too busy living the good life.
And it seems to be working pretty well so far. But it can take several years to get the job done. And...sometimes there is some resistance from local gangsters who want to take control of the recently defeated country for themselves.
Which is what is happening in Iraq, as we speak.
It helps if you step back and look at the big picture. And remember the historical precedent.
