Actually, crime rates have dropped significantly since the Liberals have been in power. This includes violent crimes and homicides.
For example, homicides per 100,000 people was 2.18 in 1993 and 1.78 in 2001. This is a lot lower than 1977's figure of 3.00. Also, violent crimes per 100,000 people was 1,083.68 in 1993 and 994.47 in 2001. And, total crimes (excluding traffic) per 100,000 people was 10,342.13 in 1991 and 7,747.34 in 2001.
Even total crimes has decreased since 1993. For example, total crimes (excluding traffic) was 2,735,623 in 1993 and 2,408,021 in 2001.
All statistics are from Table 252-0013 - Crime, by detailed offences for Canada, which is from Statistics Canada.
Now, if I had a bit more time, I would look up values from the last few years, but the trend seems pretty clear.
since every country has different standards to which their medical professionals are trained, it only makes sense that any immigrant doctors should undergo a rigorous recertification process.
it's not reasonable to expect to get off the plane from cuba or china or rwanda and expect canada to immediately hand them a scalpel and a $150,000 paycheck.
i can't comment on the voodoolady or your 'super doctor' wife, though i suspect a lot of that is embellishment.
That's not allowed james_squared - facts are irrelevant. The Liberals are bad, vote for the Conservatives - we aren't as badas the Liberals. You can trust us. Facts get in the way and you voters are too dumb to understand them anyway. Statistics damn statistics. Vote Conservative and we'll protect you from superfluous facts and we'll cut your taxes too.
I read and re-read and correct and edit and delete and add to my posts until they are exactly what I want them to be.
I take this stuff VERY seriously. It is a craft and an art, as far as I'm concerned. Iv'e written several hundred newspaper columns and two dozen magazine articles. My words have been published numerous times in national magazines (both Canadian and American).
And I mean every single word that I write. Emphatically.
Okay that should be an easy claim to back up. Let's see a few from a National magazine.

"Immigrant doctors may not be up to snuff here in Canada. Better to have them work their way up the system". Safer that way.
But that doesn't explain why a "doctor"with shady credentials from a shaky place like Trinidad is suddenly accepted as a practicing physician here in Canada by the ruling Liberal Party...and given an exalted position of power on their own Cabinet...
While an accredited real Doctor from Cuba (who has been teaching Canadian doctors their trade for almost ten years) is told she must start all over.
You might just want to ask yourself why this is so. And ask yourself why the Federal Liberals have decided to back certain people from certain ethnic and sexual orientation groups no matter WHAT sort of credentials they have. Just to buy some votes from certain groups.
Or do you LIKE being hornswaggled by known criminals? Coerced into voting for people who are committed to stealing your money and screwing up the land that you live in? Just as long as everything seems to be "all right" on the surface?
Troutmask - there is no question there has to be some retraining but not the idiotic methodology there is now and the restricted places for immigrant medical staff to retrain.
They should be immediately in the medical community perhaps under a family doctor and there is a program in the works to do the retraining in the orginating country to synch with Canadian standards.
Even a short stint in the military medicial teams would make use of their training and help short staffed military facilities for veterans etc.
Troutmask on population an argument could be made that we represent a cherished reserve of undeveloped land but the fact is we have built the infrastructure for 30-40 million people and the world population WILL climb another 40-50% before it levels off and begins to fall.
Japan is going to be in dire straits as it's popluation will be cut in two and there ARE NO KIDS and there is no immigration.
One of the planets goals need to be to work towards sustainable population and resource use. Japan could do with less as the entire population of Canada resides in Tokyo which is physically smaller than the GTA. Still even there it will be a terrific adjustment even with all their wealth.
Imbalances between nations lead to conflict. We need young and energetic peoples from all over the world to make up for our low birthrate. Quebec has a huge problem that way with the lowest birthrate in the western world.
They need Francophones big time.
Gearing budgets and economies on never ending growth is something that must change and is changing. I was glad to see the Green Ribbon campaign by graduating MBAs pledging to actively engage in sustainable technologies for business.
But depopulating has it's own set of problems especially when the infrastructure is already there and many other nations have yet to get population growth under control.
I'm thrilled Toronto has grown from a dull WASP bastion to a vibrant world city.
It's on to the next stage and that will take 20 years to take it to the next level of density and services. We will need hard working immigrants to help build that cityscape.

Fear mongering, crime fear, fear of different, fear fear fear- all right wing drivel ala US. More foam at the mouthers nonsense
I'm glad to see the Toronto Police force finally get aired out.
We've got some honest, realistic management in Ontario finally both city and province. A leader for the city, a manager for the province.

Cycle Canada, HOT BIKE, Rocky Mountain Rider all have numerous articles that I have written, macdoc.
If you want to see one of my many drawings that have been published, then pick up a copy of Cycle Canada and flip to the "Vintage Views" column by John Cooper.
Over top of that, you will see a pen and ink drawing of a 1914 Cyclone overhead cam race engine. Under that drawing, you will see my seismic signature.(it says "MacNutt"...my real name)
I drew that in 1989, and it's been published in every issue since then. Cycle Canada used to publish a new drawing of mine every month, during the late eighties and early nineties.
I used to write a widely published column for several local newspapers for aout five years.
My first published photo was in 1979. There have been many more contributions since then. Both written and visual. In many many magazines.
I've also authored several technical papers for some rather obscure trade magazines that deal with hydrocarbon exploration (my personal specialty). Some are currently being used as teaching aids.
Or so I am told.
Check for yourself. I always use my real name. Just as I do here at ehmac.
