Feces-centric and obnoxious sockpuppet censored by broadcaster.
This is something no broadcaster does without overwhelming viewer complaints.
I guess the stench of the show was too much for Canadians.
"The antics of a plastic puppet dog ignited a national-unity uproar yesterday, as anti-Quebec remarks made on the Conan O'Brien show forced its Canadian broadcaster to apologize.
Before yesterday's show, CHUM Television apologized for the sketch, ..... pledging to cut the controversial material from the rebroadcast of Thursday night's show.
.....You know, he poops on things, he pees on things, and says old insults." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...ational/Canada
The hallmark of a free society is that occasionally things get said that make others uncomfortable.
I don't find Ed the Sock funny, but I like "This hour has 22 minutes" etc. I prefer Letterman to Leno. So, I don't watch Ed or Leno, but I don't demand that they be banned.
So what if O'brian did a tasteless bit. Just how different is it than Mercer doing "Talking to American's", a bit that plays on ignorance.
Political correctness is going too far these days.
And FWIW, I really liked the Bare Naked Ladies, but thought that Jim Carry bit was not at all entertaining.

making light of a nation as a whole (american and canadians) is fair game, but doing so against a specific ethnic group is not
Make fun of Canadians saying; "eh" - OK
Make fun of our cold weather - OK
Make fun of our coloured money OK
etc.
if french-canadians are fair game (the skit probably played very well in the U.S. as they hate any French nowadays), what is next?
Jews?
Chinese?
Would it have been "kosher" if Triumph walked into a Toronto kosher butcher near Bathurst and Lawrence and told Hassidic Jews he could "smell their crotch?"
Would it be ok if Triumph walked into a restaurant in Chinatown and told the Chinese patrons that they were in North America now and to speak English.
The above examples would not be tolerated and would evoke immediate responses from B'nai Brith, ADL and the Chinese Canadian Association, to say the least.
Racism has no place in humor, under any circumstances.
It surely must bring into question the values of audiences who find it funny, and apparently not many outside the Toronto area did.
Even the reaction in Alberta, who are regularly called "rednecks" by easterners, was shock at the racial slurs. The local CTV news couldn't find one person in an on-the-street interview in the trendy Old Strathcona area of Edmonton who thought it funny or appropriate. This from the home of the annual "Fringe Festival" where nearly anything goes.
The truly sad part about it all, is they did it with our tax dollars, not a wise choice given the result. Perhaps Conan should be asked to return our money.
if french-canadians are fair game (the skit probably played very well in the U.S. as they hate any French nowadays), what is next?
Jews?
Chinese?
And no ones ever made fun of Jews or Chinese people on TV.
People should really understand that a rubber dog puppet's opinions really shouldn't matter that much, I don't think he knows all the good sides of french canada like poutine and the drinking age being 18.
Are we still allowed to make/laugh at newfie jokes?
that's a joke, right?
why does any ethnic humour need to be supported?
just because it has been "accepted" in the past, doesn't mean it should still be accepted
surely, there can be better topics of humour other than basing them on ethnicity?
aren't we, the human race, more mature than that?
