You start off in a foriegn country with nothing and not speaking the language.
You set your sights on THE world body building title and win it and go on to win it 13 times.
You set your sights on being a movie star and become one of the richest and most successful in the world.
You marry into one of the most powerful familes in the world.
You get elected to govern the 5th most powerful economy in the world.
You do this on the strength of your own drive and ability.
Perhaps Michael, you might revise your opinion a tad because it's very unrealistic. In no sense could you ever call Arnold a simpleton and it's undignified on your part to do so.
now the Shrub on the other hand......

It's no use, Macdoc, I don't think Macspectrum will ever forgive Arnold for driving a Hummer.

Vote for Arnold. He's the environmental governor ! He could be driving a tank, but chose the more environmental Hummer.
After all, he did marry a Kennedy and they [Kennedys] are all environmentalists. Robert Kennedy Jr. did speak in Toronto on behalf of a mayoral candidate and did speak on the environment.
Joe Kennedy did say that he would not pay for one more vote than was needed to elect his son JFK to the presidency. That's being environmental !!
Ted's [Kennedy] blue box is very full every weekend with glass bottles.
The issue is the word "simpleton", no one spoke about intellectual genius and there are various kinds "effectiveness".
Truman was effective, no where near a scholar but he got things done and motivated people.
The shrub has "had his way paved' for his entire career, Arnold hasn't, he's done it on his own merits and is "unsimpleton" enough to recognize that much of the election results were due to Maria - the first thing he said in his acceptance speech.
His "proposal" was was the one item that caught everyone's ear "no politics as usual". Leadership is not the platform it's the ability to motivate people and inspire people. He was able to do that enough to get elected..we'll see how effective he is.
The shrub was not elected in the eyes of a majority of Americans and aside from a brief moment of glory putting his arm around a fireman is hardly inspiring.
Yes I've heard Arnold speak - he speaks almost identically to my father-in-law and the German cadences can be hilarious at times but he was also one of the most inspring leaders of his town of Sault Ste Marie and a huge influence on Canadian Soccer.
Last time I checked actors are paid to entertain and Arnold seems to do rather well at that. I hardly equate Anthony Hopkins as a person with his role in Silence of the Lambs so why would I do so with Arnold.
That said, being able to "send up" his own image in a fluff piece like Junior DOES say a lot to his character. There's always been that wry undercurrent of "send up" even in the most action packed situations and he's come very close to breaching the 4th wall at times with his "asides", all in good humour.
As to environment, California's not likely to change much and that's not where the issues are - the Sierra Club didn't get elected, Arnold did and he's most unlikely to fight an uphill battle in state that leads in "clean air" legislation.
It's also a tad hard to square your applauding 110 flights a day to Toronto Islands ( can we say noise pollution ) with being such an environmentalist and your Bimmer is hardly a Prius.
Making fun of someone's use of an adopted language is demeaning to you Michael.
The shrub has little excuse, the best schools, 'Merican born and bred, just a dim bulb with a smirk.
Did you watch Arnold's acceptance speech? I did, and he did well with it. No, he's not slick Willy when it comes to "speechifyin'" but it came through as heart felt and effective and even the rabid press liked the "no politics as usual" line.
Grey's speech was terrific BUT, he's out of office.
Bottom line I think the "simpleton" crack about Arnie was ill conceived and not based on any reality.
Given that the shrub has frequently been characterized even as a moron there indeed is a basis there but not with Arnold unless you are buying into his role as Conan as being who the guy actually is, and THAT may be a bit "ahem" simplistic shall we say..

David, please, you insult me and your own intelligence.
My note about "Have you listened to him speak in his speeches?" was dealing with the content of such speeches, That is why I put the "speeches" part in.
I would beseech you to remove any and all inferences on your part that I, the son of immigrants who had accents too, would in any way, shape or form judge someone by their accent.
I am disappointed and saddened that you would place such a card. It is beneath you. It is certainly insulting to me.
NOTE: more people voted to keep Grey Davis than did vote for Arnold.

I assume you misquoted my applause here for dramatic effect. I applauded a bridge to the island to help make the island airport more accessible in all types of weather for Toronto's downtown core. Should we just leave the airplance fuel fumes for those unlucky enough to live near the airport and/or under flightpaths.
David, time to pony up and get some stronger coffee or reading glasses or both.
Methinks thou doth protest too much.
As for my "Bimmer", wow, that is a low blow. All that Kirkegard and that is the best you can come up with?
This is better than CNN. I don't know which side is winning here yet, but this is juicy. Maybe a live debate over who should be or not be the Governor of California could be set up here at ehmac and we could all tune in and vote a winner. Ah, politics. I just wish we had some people like Arnie running for office up here in Canada. I can't remember anybody since Trudeau as being even remotely enigmatic. Our political situation here at home is so boring people almost sleep through elections. If I'm not mistaken wasn't our last election the lowest turn out in over 15 years? That's really sad. I know who I would vote for if that said person was here in Canada. I have a lot of respect for people who are not career politians. It makes me think about why a person would want to get into office. They certainly are NOT doing it for the money! Seeing Arnold win the election makes me even more aware that the American political system is alive and well and living in California. At least Arnold won the election fair and square. No bloody recount or brother in Florida fixing the results and pulling strings while Americans stood around helpless and couldn't do anything but let them steal the top office of the most powerful nation on earth. It will be fun to watch Bush have to work with Arnold for the remainder of his last year and a half in office. America should be embarrased with the behavior of their past two leaders. A crook and an adulterer. I know that nobody's perfect, but do you think that you can keep your indiscretions a secret while you run a country. Maybe Arnie can terminate the current president and blame it on Sky-Net. As far as speeches go, Arnie is a better public speaker than me and I have no accent. It's only in the last century that we really know what our political leaders look and acted like. Before that we have to go by hand written interpretations of what people remember they think is what happened during pulic addresses. I'm not talking about the verbatim account of speechers here. I'm talking about the poise and manner of how people acted at any public address. It must be very difficult for public leaders nomatter who they are to be in politics and also have to live up to the scrutinizing public eye of the media being in their face all the time. I think that judements should be left till later once we have seen what the man is capable of acomplishing in California. Come on Arnie, make us proud to cheer you on.
This thread has reminded me or how lucky I am that I live in a country that allows free thinking and free speech. I work in documentary films and have completed recent projects that were filmed in Kosovo, Kazakstan and Sierra Leon and the people that live there definately do not have the luxury of debating the types of issues that are being talked about here.
You've got to watch David Letterman's current schtick called "Meet the Governor" showing all this footage of Arnold every night.
Arnold smoking a huge reefer - and yes he was really inhaling.
Arnold dancing with 10 bimbos in bikinis, going up to one and grabbing her @ss with both hands...
Jesse "The Body" Ventura, a former WWF wrestler was voted in a Govenor as well.
Its nothing more than a popularity contest. I mean, over 12,000 people voted for Gary Coleman.
Only in Amerika. Arnold maybe isn't a simpleton but I could think of many other words.
Here are some immoralized Awnold quotes:
"I saw this toilet bowl. How many times do you get away with this to take a woman, grab her upside down, and bury her face in a toilet bowl? I wanted to have something floating there ... The thing is, you can do it, because in the end, I didn't do it to a woman she's a machine! We could get away with it without being crucified by who-knows-what group." -describing a scene in "Terminator 3"
"As much as when you see a blonde with great tits and a great ass, you say to yourself, 'Hey, she must be stupid or must have nothing else to offer,' which maybe is the case many times. But then again there is the one that is as smart as her breasts look, great as her face looks, beautiful as her whole body looks gorgeous, you know, so people are shocked." in an interview with Esquire
"I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman."
"My friends don't want me to mention Kurt's name, because of all the recent Nazi stuff and the U.N. controversy, but I love him and Maria does too, and so thank you, Kurt." on his friend and fellow Austrian Kurt Waldheim, a Nazi war criminal
"My relationship to power and authority is that I'm all for it. People need somebody to watch over them. Ninety-five percent of the people in the world need to be told what to do and how to behave." in a 1990 interview with U.S. News

David, please explain which of the above makes Arnold some sort of genius?
Have you listened to him speak in his speeches? Have you seen him act? Dubya was elected too. Doesn't mean his is not a simpleton.
We all know you love Arnie and hope to hell that Maria has some sort of magic spell on him to become, ahem (I have to cough when I type this) compassionate conservative Damn that hurt.
Arnold has not made any concrete proposals except to terminate Grey Davis and he was rude to Houghington during the debate. (Insert groping here)
Next you'll be telling me that Reagan is a Rhode scholar?
