Jan 14. is New Year's day for those that observe the Julian calendar.
I know this will be a better year than the last one. Palindrome years are usually not ones full of cheer. I raise a virtual glass to all as we say goodbye to the old year and bring in the bouncing baby new year. |

I have just returned from a new years eve libation with my friend Adam Darachuk, who not only celebrated New Years Eve with me, but also his 73rd birthday.
I had a great time and wish all a Happy New Year tomorrow! Cheers

Dr. G.,
the Julian calendar is 13 days and some odd hours off and increases to be off more each year for the next little while New Year is Jan. 14, but it will change to Jan. 15 by the time I get to be an old fart. |

Happy New Year, Macspectrum. It was a year ago today that you posted that original wish.

Thanks for noting that. DrG...here I was trying to figure out how 2003 was a palindrome...I thought perhaps it was some kind of Julian in-joke

Hmmm.....
2003 saw the defeat of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Women are now on TV in that country...they are allowed to attend schools, and are even being taught to READ!...and they are no longer being publicly executed for wearing the wrong clothes. 2003 saw the defeat (and the arrest) of Saddam Hussein. It also saw the liberation of Iraq from this terrible despot and his vermin offspring. Iraq is on the brink of becoming a prosperous democracy right now. That has NEVER happened in the past three decades! 2003 saw the thawing of the previously icy relationship between the USA and Iran. Iran is now allowing UN inspections of their previously super-secret weapons programs. At this particular moment, both the "reformers" and the "conservatives" are locked in an intractible position. Full democracy is approaching on their horizon. Like a runaway freight train. It's only a matter of time. 2003 also saw the sudden admission by Libya that they have been conducting major WMD programs for more than twenty-five years! And they are ALSO welcoming inspections...for the first time in a generation! How times have CHANGED!! 2003 also saw the first BIG change in how Kim Jong Il actually views the world around him. He now knows that his nuclear program is a dead end....and is willing to use it as a bargaining chip for the food that he so desperately needs to feed his imprisoned people.( like every other Marxist State...North Korea can't seem to feed itself) 2003 also saw the end of the Saudi Royal family's support for international terrorism. Love them or hate them...they have made a MAJOR sea change on the terrorism issue. This is just the START of many big changes in that oil-rich monarchy. Trust me on this. 2003 also saw the biggest change in the attiutude of Syria in many decades! They used to silently support Islamic terrorism. Now, they DON'T. BIG change! 2003 also saw monumental changes in the relationship between India and Pakistan. These two countries are now nuclear powers. They have been at war for decades. Everyone thought that they would be shooting nukes at each other, by now. But 2003 (at least the end of it) saw these two old adversaries shaking hands and smiling and resuming commercial airline flights. No more threat of nuclear war in this region. Not a single hint of it! BIG change!! There is quite a bit more...but I won't subject my good friends to all of the evidence. It would be terribly humiliating for them, after all. So...I just GOTTA ask, macspectrum: 2003 sounds like a banner year. By any way of measurement! HUGE positive changes in a region that nobody ever thought would change! This is a GOOD thing!! Unless you are a devoted disciple of the failing left. And are a totally comitted political ideologue who can't see any good coming from the Republicans... and will NOT see any bad coming from the Democrats! No matter WHAT they do!! In that case...2003 was a very BAD year! Perhaps you might consider changing your priorities to refelect the reality. Or... at the very least.... modifying your ideological preconceptions to allow for a grudging acknowlegement of the success that is coming from the other side? (we can only hope) BTW....macspectrum and everyone else: The human race is once again going into space. In a BIG way. After a thirty year hiatus. About bloody time!! All of the positive stuff that is outlined above...AND the renewed space exploration initiative, came from the guys who you consider to be inherently "evil". Perhaps it's time to re-evaluate your priorites. Based on pure logic....not nonsense. And I can only say that 2003 was one of the very BEST years we have had in a VERY long time!! Let's hope that 2004-2008 is even better!! It certainly seems like it COULD be even better!! Bring it ON, George W.!! You are on a ROLL!!! ![]() [ January 16, 2004, 03:20 AM: Message edited by: macnutt ] |
